Someone was on about, robots and computers the other day.
Remembered, Tomorrows World in the 70s saying they (robots) would do all the work and we (the humans) would only do 2-3 days a week.

Got sold that one, hook line and sinker, didn't we.....

it hasn't pointed them up though has it. a good brickie will always be faster than a machine . by the time u set a track up on level ground programe it for door and window reveals and point up u could get the job done in half the time . and who is loading all the bricks in putting the wall ties and insulation in

Yeah but it doesn't stop for morning cha break, dinner break, knock off at 5 o'clock, the weekend, doesn't take holidays, go sick etc etc. Its the same in the bank, used to be 4 tellers behind a counter, now there is one part time and two machines that do all the work the humans used to do. Also in Boots the chemist, they have self service tills and only one human attended till.

Problem is Brightspark, its Hobsons choice. You either use them or get stuffed. The girl knocks off at 3 and if you want to bank its the machine or nothing.

Apart from all that, the worlds population is growing, and less and less people are needed due to mechanisation and computerisation, where will we all end up ? Where will it all end ?

There was a piece on yesterdays "click" programme on BBC, It was showing Dysons new hair dryer (a snip at 300 notes, i must get one ), It showed it being made and there was not a human in sight. Dyson is worth a huge amount of dosh, but employs relatively few people, if this is the trend, Billionares employing nobody, then how do people exists ? Dyson pays a large amount of tax and that tax is then paid in turn to the unemployed, is that the model ? The government pays everyone every week an allowance, and its spent on products from the likes of Dyson ?

You could use four , five or more such machines on one house build job .

Back in 1985 I was working with a remarkable guy called John Wilson ( my tutor in industrial electronics ) , trying to modify the language we were using for a simple pick & locate precisely computer system referred to as "TINA " . To get it to converted into what Microsoft was using . Our aim was to get the arm to pick & accurately place bricks that had been given an epoxy glue face to save having to use carbon fuels to make cement . Sadly John died before it was done , I'd left to run my own business .

John reckoned that within 25 to 35 years the first robotic builds would be happening , once the tower crane and foundations had been set up . Seems he wasn't to far out .

The fact that such machines can run 24/7 in most weathers and only need maintenance costs once the have been paid for is a big reason for using them to build low cost housing . Having them use large building blocks say 700 x 700 straight off the lorries would see a home built in a few hours if the adhesive bonding used was high strength & of a 60 or so year long viability rather than a standard construction mortar .

Think of word processing and computing ..in the early 1960's IBM's advance think tank guys reckoned that there was only need for five or at the most six IBM computers in the world and that was with less computing power than an average battery wrist watch had some 30 years ago .

Yes but those computers and machines were developed to do things that were difficult for humans to do such as maths etc. The emphasis now seems to be on developing machines to remove people from the equation.

It is a huge problem which will happen and in fact is happening now. I remember my Mum telling me that she has been on a WEA (workers education authority) course in 50's, and they were told that in the future nobody would have to work because it would all be done by robots. How optimistic. What we are seeing now with driverless vehicles etc is that there will be less and less work for humans to do, but the mentality of the people who own these things is that taxes are wrong and to be avoided by any means possible, and that those who don't have jobs are idle wasters. If this technology expands, then there needs to be a sea change in attitudes. The mega rich have to realise that they can't be mega rich on their own, it simply doesn't work, and in any case, if nobody has work, who is going to buy all the things that the driverless vehicles will deliver? Will everyone be given just enough money to survive? Will they still be blamed while the money is shovelled offshore? How will it work?
