Different video. I think the idea needs work, a shroud that covers the weld would be an idea, and the torch moves away from the cooling metal to fast causing it to oxidise (you can see sparks as the gas shielding is removed) but the idea is wonderful.

Back in the past i used to fit and maintain the air and cooling pipework and cooling towers for robot mig's and spot welders.
I do not know how much is still threaded or welded nowadays. 6" at the towers down to about 4" close to cells then drops in 2"

I think we'll be needing a citizens income at some point. The implications of higher automation are absolutely staggering, when you start thinking about them.
Basically nearly everything requiring labour input can be automated by a robot, and whilst the technology is still in its infancy, i think the sky is the limit when it comes to robotics / AI.
We're seeing more and more CNC style machines, of course, even at the hobby level now, and drones etc that can fly automated "missions", avoid objects, fly in swarms etc etc, it's really mind-bogging stuff. There's also a LOT of research being done in machine-learning (e.g have a computer look at past data, and try to make future predictions based on current state of a system etc) at university level at the moment, or in astronomy where you observe thousands of galaxies and then use a computer to find supernovae etc etc rather than having to sift through data manually.
I'm seeing similar stuff happening in computing as well - back in the day you needed an army of techs to run a decent sized network, however with the new configuration methodologies we use, the required input per machine is much smaller. For example, I do a lot of programming in Ansible (http://www.ansible.com), and though it's taken us months to set up, we now have in effect cookie cutter style linux server setup. It now takes me a couple of minutes to set up a job to produce a server (if it hasn't been built before), and then the computers go off and do their thing and come back online fully configured and ready. This is a process that used to take several hours to days depending on how complicated the setup was, and it was totally error prone as well with servers never quite looking the same - not so anymore. Completely consistent, and if I want to change some setting on a set of servers, all it takes is a minute, where-as before we'd have to log on to each server, fix some stuff etc. Stuff that used to be very labour intensive all of a sudden isn't, and it's basically "white collar jobs" being automated this time around

We're heading towards making ourselves obsolete. I heard a statistic somewhere (could have been here) that 30% of the jobs of today will be gone within 20 years. Things like people working at manual machine tools will be museum territory, driverless vehicles, well there's drivers on the dole. I suppose pilots and flight crew will be the same. The list is endless really.
