Thanks - I'm closer - you have to click on the speedometer pictures to get anywhere useful. It's a challenge like one of those computer games that I'm not good at. Still didn't find a complete history of colours and interior trim, but don't worry - I've given up.

maybe these photos might help

lap welding is a good idea if your welder do not have a very low setting (lower than 30A)

with my machine i can but weld a lot of repair panels and if need more strength I have a joddler that I can use to put a step in the metal

and hide the join

Morning Classic - thanks very much for posting the pics. Really was an enormous help - same problem in the same part of exactly the same car! (right down to the colour - take it yours is a 2cv6 Special too?).

As an update, I had a pop at repairing it on Saturday.

Removed the rear wing (after much swearing and grinding of rusted screws), marked up the bit to be chopped out with the repair panel, and set about cutting away with the angle grinder - it went rather like this: sparks flying, roar of the grinder, metal turning red, and then pfft... looked like an explosion in a bakery. I'd run the grinder into the dollops of body filler a previous owner had used to repair the sill/ c-post

In short, it took a lot more chopping than I planned. I've got all the metal tacked into place - just need to finish with some nice seams and a tidy up.

i have 3 red 2cv6 Specials (and a few clubs too) so i have a bit of welding to do

if you make sure that you clamp it well and take your time and well in short runs you shouldn't have any problems

my welder will go down to about 20A so i can butt weld a lot of panels on 2cvs without burning through

And yes, it's my '71 D Super.. which quite literally brought Central London to a standstill at the weekend. The points managed to pack up in Knightsbridge - at a spot where road-works forced three lanes of traffic into one

You can imagine how popular we were

Oops. I managed to annoy people just by breaking down in a car towing a trailer in the middle of a 5 lane junction in London.

No idea what the collective noun for 2CVs is, but we were once faced with 3 Plein Air Renault 4s (very rare sight - they are never seen more than one at a time so of course there was no collective noun). We decided on "A flap of Plein Airs". Like a flight but on more of an ecomomy level. Might also work for 2CVs.

I used to have a Renault 4 it was my first road car (bought from Derek @ Renospeed)
we used to call it "die Handtasche" (German for the handbag) as every thing used to be carried in it

it never failed to or get me where i wanted to go but in the end it lost the fight against rust

i was later given a Renault 4 van when i started to work for a dispatch company

the guys who had escort and Vauxhall vans were quick to take the Mick

but they soon stopped when they saw it's Tardis like ability to carry whole office loads of stuff


both were great cars
