I got this TIG from Tom yesterday. Today I opened it up. What do you think, dead or alive?

Here's a shot with a mug for scale.

Oh-oh. Missing screws. Never a good sign!

Here's the internals. Hmm, that does not look enticing on the bottom.

Ahh. I think we might just have our culprit here.

Someone's been tinkering - lead was unclipped.


So the main board is a gonner.

Took a whole bank of IGBT/MOSFETs with it.


Secondary board looks in fair nick though.

It's hard to tell due to amount of damage but either the connector corroded and arced or the arc caused the connector to fry. There are quite a few very molten bits inside from it.

Given it's the main two boards that are gone (they count as two) I don't think a repair will be cost effective so it's probably going to be scavenged for bits.

C'est la vie though, if you don't have a shot you'll never hit it

"Bought as part of job lot from workshop clearout, I know nothing about them and can't try it".

"Has no leads and I don't know anything about them anyway, so I can't test it and it may well work, but it just wouldn't be honest to sell it as working. It could well be a bargain".

so many ways to con poor unsuspecting people...selling this tig as an easy repair would grab another member for the forum though when the 'newbie with project tig' thread is started

Dunno what your fretting about, bit of fibre glass, few marker pens to drawn on tracks and components, blow out the cobwebs and away you go with eBay, oh don't forget that all important screw

I reckon you could possibly fix that by introducing a 3rd board and connect to the good parts surrounding the burnt out pcb, looks like that was a bad connection that caused it by the damage on the cable

i was saving that sort of advice for whoever buys it and comes here for help haha
