Recovery Shackles

Hi, I'm making a custom rear bumper for a Ford Ranger and I need to weld some recovery shackle eyes on. I've made them out of 1" mild steel which needs to be welded to 1/2" Mild steel backing plate. Can anyone advise what would be the best Electrode to use.

I have the same job on the go for my Spec Lift truck front counter balance bumper.

I have had an eye CNC machined up (by my mate) ready to weld to the bumper.

Mine will have to be done in situ.

May talk my pipe welding mate into the job as it is such a really load critical weld. Going to be a multipass weld in position with 4mm rods and lots of amps for 7010 rods.

Can't the OP remove the bumper and weld on a bench with a normal 7018?
Are the 7010 Low Hydrogen? The 6010 aren't (to my knowledge).

6010s are a fast freeze pipe welding rod.

Removing the bumper is not an option on the recovery truck (too many things connected to it), it will be easier to pay a talented welder to do it in situ.

only problem with the counter balance bumper is they put extra strain on the chassis, I repaired a transit chassis that had cracked and parted due to the strain, but without the bumper the steering was light as a feather and contact with the road wasn't great

Bumper is full of concrete.

I have thought of building a tank in the bumper and one in the middle of the chassis, then pump 200lts (200kg) of anti freeze about when I need the weight up front, if you understand what I am trying to suggest?

yeah the bumper on the transit had blocks of lead, with tanks of fluid you could adjust what ballast you had up front which would be better for different loads, fit a guage to show amount up front and you could adjust quickly as you got used to it

I don't think pumping fluid about is such a silly idea, high volume pump and anti-freeze would not take many mins to get the weight from middle to front of the truck.

When the truck is unloaded it would drive better and when the spec axle lift is in use, you would pump the weight over the steering.

If you had a large bore pipe between the two with a solenoid or manual valves could you just pressurise the appropriate tank to move the fluid across would only need low pressure.

Hi, Are you sure about moving weight around the vehicle? As I understand it part of the lift rating of the vehicle is the relationship of the rear load from the rear axle compared to the wheelbase and the weight on the front axle. I'm not sure how they would view the weight being variable in regards to rating it.

as long as any combination doesn't overload an axle it would be fine

As I understand it part of the lift rating of the vehicle is the relationship of the rear load from the rear axle compared to the wheelbase and the weight on the front axle. I have thought about this allot, all spec lift trucks only have an axle rating lift, lower than the rear axle weight limit.

There is formula about the distance of the lifting arm in mm from the centre of the rear axle.

The front axle load does not come into it (I know it seems to make sense that it should)

Most body builders seem to work on the principle an underlift truck should be as heavy as you can possibly get away with.

Why on earth would you use a 7010 rod? 7010 isnt Low Hydrogen either, its a cellulose coating.

You want plain old 7018.

For what you show I should use a 7018. Prep is way more important than the electrode though. Being of no knowledge of your skill level and going off your need to ask I should just advise you buy one or have it made out
In the case of failure during a snatch recovery an object like that could do more than smart a bit!
