Mild Steel

Just some clarification...I had a quick mild steel repair to make last night, the TIG was all setup on the bench ready, i used that instead of dragging the Mig out. Some odd results. appear to have alot of penetration as well as alot of build up as if the weld was cold.

any tips?

I will offer no comment on the weld but I think the area needs beefing up because that looks like the third fracture in that area.

No fracture...its an extension. Not the greatest...Its only a temp measure before i re-engineer the whole thing.

You've just added more reinforcement than is needed that's all. It's not a bad looking job at all. If you don't want as much height don't add as much filler. If you want more spread give it more current.

I don't think so. Best wait for Richard and co to comment as I am only a TIG beginner.

Madness.
Google is obviously referring to mild Steel gmaw.
For tig you should always use pure argon or argon helium.
ALL MATERIALS.

thats cleared that up then, Thank you Richard. Good news as i have a bit of Mild steel jobs coming in.

Gosh dont use Argon CO2 mix with tig it will not go well. Your material needs to be a little cleaner too. Apart from that all looks okay.

Mild steel Tig, no need for anything other than PURE ARGON.

CO2 mixtures are added to make active mixtures for mig welding to increase heat imput, travel speeds etc.

Sometimes other gases are added for tig welding, ie helium to do the same as above for welding aluminium, also hydrogen is sometimes used for tig welding stainless is certain situations.
