What do I call this rubber seal?

I was taught to never prefix any sum of money by the words "just" or "only".

Thanks for the kind offer. I think I need to get on several planes (that's the plan Friday and Saturday!) and get home, then get some pictures of the housing - I'm thinking that the puller won't be able to help, but happy to find out otherwise!

Don't go and wreck thing till the pictures have been put up and commented on by several briliant minds/ engineers .

If the Pickavant puller is no use and there is a steel ring in there , there may be a way for of one of us lathe players to make an extraction tool that is an expanding jaw on a 1/ 4 inch wall.
A simple grip by gently tightening a bolt head can set split jaws in th rim and then you use a claw hammer & few block of wood the make a saddle and ease it out .

The other alternative is for one of us to turn up a tubular cutter for you and put it on a drill sized shank , so you can slip it over the shaft and using a light drill or a drill press you can slowly but gently advance it in to the old seals to try and churn them to bits .
So long as you take the cutter out every few rotations and blow the crud out with an air line or a tube & your lungs it should not take long before it's all nice & clean .

Not a circlip hiding there among the black grease etc, holding the seal in? Don't recommend this without knowing what the seal is fitted against but hammer and punched metal cased seals easily come out.

@skotl : Here you go skot, the three legs are reversible to allow the puller to bear on the inner surface of the bearing race. There's an 'extension' point which allows the centre point to extend so it will bear on a surface beyond the reach of the legs, you'd need to use that I think [without seeing your pics of the setup]. I'll let you decide if it might help with your job.

After much delay, I finally got pics of the gearbox.

Here's the gearbox itself. Shaft, as you'll be able to tell, runs left to right and the knackered washers were inside these cylindrical arms;

Inside one of the collars - you can just see the brass (like) indent where the washer goes;

Now, I think that the bottom part in this picture is a collar and that it should come off, allowing me to fit a new washer, and re-seat the collar - whaddyathink?

The gearbox and alleged collar are relatively soft, as you can see by the (hopefully minor) damage done by me trying to remove the collar with a screwdriver.
I've also tried heating it, to no effect.

Would the puller that slim_bot_fat kindly posted pics of help in this situation?

The gearbox is only available as a complete assembly at £400 so if I can't get the seals replaced then the mower is in the bin!

They look to me like the have been screwed in to hold the oil seal, have you tried a bit of heat and unscrewing, careful not to crush them when applying pressure. Quite a lot of corrosion there, is the shaft ok?

That's interesting - I hadn't considered unscrewing them - will try that, thanks.

Yeah - the whole machine has seen better days - shaft's in decent shape, strength/structure wise but has some surface rust.
If I can get it going on the cheap then it will be worthwhile but if it looks like costing decent money then I'll jack it in.

Is it in a groove? I would have thought that Iv yes the outer part is screwed, or more likely pressed in..... needs a good clean outside so you can have a proper look.

Where are the bearings? Do you have a pic of the shaft in place

Looks like they are phosphor bronze bushes rather than bearings, still in there.

Heat the casing up inside a wooden box using a 100 watt incandescent bulb for about four hours to get the casing all nice & expanded & any lubricant thinned out enough for it to creep about . . if the ends are screwed in they should come out fairly easy . if they have been pushed in you should be able to drive them out with an aluminium bar or brass bar from the opposite side through the holes .

PM me if it gets to you thinking of scrapping it , don't bash it to bits ,send it to me I'll get it out one way or another .. I have plenty of time I'm now officially retired .

I may turn up a tank cutter type device and take it out a few thou at a time . or I may take the route of boiling it for an hour or so in some detergent & water to soften the rubber then hit it with a 1500 psi power washer once it's cooled to erode what rubber is left . If that does not work I'll start making a puller so it can be assembled from the inside of the bore /casing shoulder to grip whatever is there with its expanded collets , cone and cap for it ( on my lathe )

If they are threaded and screwed in one may well have a left hand thread meaning you have to turn it clock-wise to remove.
