Bit of advice

I am spray painting my project Triumph Herald 13/60 and very much followed the advice in the guide on this site.

I use a Sealey s701G gravity gun http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sealey-S701G-Professional-Gravity-Set-Up/dp/B000ROF32Y it has a 1.4 nozzle (not sure of the difference)

I am painting in Cellulose Old English Whitehttp://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/390670058988?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT. I have stripped the panels back to bare metal and filled and primed.
This is the first time I have painted a car but wanted to learn, best way to learn have a go! I tend to find I am not getting very good coverage from 600ml of paint each time. I looked at the video and paint covers the grey in one go, mine takes 3/4 goes. Then when I flat it the grey shows through again.

What am I doing wrong?

How much Cellulose should I expect to use to paint a car of a Herald size (convertible so no roof!)

sounds to me, its down to gun set up/technique/speed. Its been a while since I sprayed celly but for your application, I would expect 1.5L paint once thinned to manufacturers spec (usually 1:1 or 50/50) it should easily do your Triumph.There are a number of tutorials on you tube to have a look at. I would start with gun set up. Theres a really good one from an aussie which is informative and funny, ill see if I can find it.

Here you go. Your gun should work ok with what you are doing. The fan control on that is the wheel on the side, not on the back as in the demo. His spraying speed in the demo is about right as well.

it could be down to paint quality and how much pigment is in the paint, at £12 the paint is cheap, I had a job last week that I needed to use celly on and it was around £18 / litre how much paint did you actually use over the full car ?

Thanks for the replies. Yes it's cheap paint... In case I stuff it up didn't want to pay top dollar to sand it all off again.
I am on my third or fourth 1Ltr Tin thinning 50:50. I have two compressors although one works fine and some biggish pipe.

Pic doesn't show it that well.

Have you got enough paint volume going onto the panel and why are you flatting the paint once it's on the panel ? If you are using decent thinners you should get away with a bit of cutting and then polish but I usually leave cellulose at least a couple of days before I do anything to it.

you only need standard thinners with the primer what air pressure are you using and what tank size has the compressor got

you are certainly going through too much paint, if you are applying 3 or 4 coats just to get it to cover then you are wasting your time and money, I know its been mentioned about gun set up but, 3 or 4 litres of paint is still 3 or 4 litres of paint sure you may need more coats but the same amount of paint would have been applied, if I were you I would go to your local automotive paint supplier and get a litre from them and try again, I know you say you didn't want to pay top dollar but you have already paid more then buying 2 litres of decent paint (£37 ish) whish would have covered and the job would be done

if your using 4 ltrs of primer that's 8 ltrs when thinned down if you are using high air pressure it is atomising and just wasting paint turn the air pressure down and have a decent fan spray set up with the gun then you will get a good coverage

ok if your using top coat you need top coat thinners to get a good finish
air pressure still applies you don't need too much or it just wastes you will also need a top coat gun not a primer gun

does it look wet or dry when you apply It

why don't you use top coat thinners its better, to me it might be the gun settings or the paint or possibly the speed you are moving the gun
its best to leave the paint to settle for a day or two as already said. it may go a little orange peal effect but when its gone hard enough wet and dry with a bit of soapy water to flat then cut it should start to come up well hope it helps you a bit

He is spraying old english white top coat according to the first post and tank size will have no bearing on anything to do with paint coverage. I use the same gun with my old SIP compressor with 50ltr tank with no problems. If it looks rough you are putting it on from too far away probably. Practise on something to get your settings and technique better before you commit to the car.

Looks wet. I does have orange peel look. I sand back with 1200 and 1500

Ok here are some pics, bear in mind this is a first go at painting a car, its a project and I brought it to learn. Yes I know its not showroom, but it protects the metal, and it looks better than it did before.

Anyway have a look i have cut and polished this with G3 an G10 prior to that i used 1200 and 1500 to smooth.

The yellower photos are the same colour paint just under a portable flood lamp
