Travel to Israel.

Hi, Has any one on here been to Israel working? Im due to go next month and I keep hearing very mixed reviews. There is an agent out there who is sorting my digs and taking me to and from the jobs so I hope they know what areas to avoid. I have read that there is no longer a requirement to get a second passport as they now give you a slip of paper and everything is electronic.. However at some point I will be going to countries in the future that will certainly frown upon my visit to Israel.. So should I get a second passport anyway? Whats the food like over there? im not a fussy eater at all but just asking.

Looking forward to the trip because I will be working in some rather odd places that I will tell you all about when I get back..

I would imagine you will struggle to get a bacon sandwich.

A second passport may be a good idea to save any future hassle but I don't know how you go about sutch a thing.

I go to Isreal quite a bit, fly in to Telaviv and most work in Haifa.

They are the most troublesome officials ever, ive got Middle East stamps in my passport and of indian origin. To say they are racist is an understatement. I too had an in country agent from a large natitional company and he wasn't able to do anything. All my kit and electronics were taken for three days without explanation and agent couldn't do anything.

Every time I travel how I always get stopped. Once you are through the airport it's a really nice place, plenty of good food, beer and things to do see.

My advice is get a second passport and keep it clean, ie don't use it to visit countries that Israel doesn't like and then when in country don't have an opinion on religion and politics, oh and get used to seeing lots of Ak47s in general public

I was in Israel a couple of weeks ago. Not for work. They did not stamp my passport so i don't think you will need another one.

I think the food is good if your eating out (compared to spain). Bit weird having a burger without cheese and a pizza with no meat but the kebabs are awesome.

I am half expecting some trouble trying to get into the country purely from what I have read and heard from people. As for the kit, I need it for the job so they can have it as long as they want and I will spend the time looking around town. As for The AK47, that won't bother me in the slightest unless I am looking down the muzzle.

Never been myself but one of my colleagues used to go there regularly.

He said you get nervous the first time you see someone in a puffa jacket getting on a bus but other than that it's ok.

I will certainly be leaving my stash of pork pies at home.

Although the public transport seems to be quite good, I am hopefully going to make some good use of this agent over there and get them to take me to some good places.

I entered at Haifa twice in 2008 on a container ship; it was hard to get the time of day out of the douaniers never mind them bothering us for a stamp, except for a nice young lady douanier who was keen to show me her assault rifle and sidearm(not a euphemism).

When I was out in the desert in Egypt the Bodygaurd we had was obsessed with letting us handle his Uzi(definately not a euphemism), but he did draw the line at letting us shoot it on the grounds that if something happened on the way back and he had no rounds he would be in serious trouble.. A but of an understatement if you ask me.

Id suggest getting a second passport, if your planning to travel to exotic locations.

Easy enough to get, just get a letter from your employer explaining your going to be travellling to xyz countries and there will be times when you cannot aford to be with out your passport while awaiting visa etc.

Fill in form as normal arrange apointment at passport office, take your letter and passport, 4 hours youll have two.

Personally I would use any spare time wisely as its a lovely place, we spent four days there but I wish we had longer, we found all the locals very helpful and friendly. Whilst we did see many young conscripts we didn't see Litter. Dog muck or any trouble.
Before we went we heard many tales of woe all from people who have never been and other arm chair tourists.
Jerusalem is nice to see even if you are not interested in the religious aspect of it.
We had visas stapled to our passports but the immigration boarded the ship at see and checked our passports.

For the touristy stuff go to the walled city of Jaffa, the restaurants there are amazing

The second passport is really useful. I travel a lot less than before, but always kept a photocopy of all my docs with me as well, including tickets when they weren't electronic..

Rule no.1 for me is always learn a bit of the lingo before you got anywhere. Yes, no, Please and thankyou, good morning/evening and goodbye. Get the accent right. I think it's rude to expect people to speak English with no effort on our part to at least have a go at the plesantries and the locals will really appreciate your efforts. Don't trust anyone who seems too friendly. The food will be tasty but avoid salads at eateries-BBQ and boiled and if its made by a sweaty bloke standing infront of a brick oven choose your toppings with your pointed finger and don't worry, those stray drips landing on you dinna just add flavour! If you've not been to the mid-east before it will be a big eye opener just keep your wits about you and don't trust anyone too much, you'll be fine. Have a good trip!
