Try asking her how she'd feel if you demolished her favourite room ?

It can get to the point where a double garage sized domestic property extension plus purchase of an industrial unit could simply make moving to a larger property a cheaper and more viable option.

You also have to consider that an extension will probably increase the rates/council tax on your house.

Not in England, they may revalue your property if you sell it but if you extend or improve your property the LA won't increase the council tax.

The valuation office could put it in a higher band when they do their periodical revaluations.
