This is a link to a couple of photo's, (on the lathes.co.uk site), of the piece I'm currently wanting to sort. The ring at the back end of the headstock spindle, with the slotted screw in it, is where the damaged threads are.

This is the chavelled spindle thread.

It's not actually detrimental to use as the ring will still run over it fine, but it needs tidying a gnats.

well i have had success on something like that, with a standard large pipe cutter just rolled around it cannot come out of the thread and it just rolls it back into shape.

I think I'd run that I the 4 jaw and tidy it up that waty

Do you set the pipe cutter so that it's a loose fit, with the roller(s) just touching the other side of the shaft/spindle, but not tightened up fully?

I think I'd run that I the 4 jaw and tidy it up that waty

I may end up going that way if I don't sort it via other means. One of those occasions where it would help if I actually had any of the lathes setup and running.

yes obviously not tight enough to start cutting the shaft! just have to play with it where it is tight dont force it do it gradually, if you have spare discs you can take the sharpness off it on some old shafting you are not bothered about or touch it with very fine flap wheel so that it turns with the disc to keep it even.

Interesting. A bit of research showed claas olsend used to sell it. But don't anymore. It's available on ebay from Huddersfield but a website claims to be sole supplier in the uk and price is almost the same at 105 quid...
