Anyone knowlegable about Peugeot diesel engines ?

My Mahindra has a 2.1 XD diesel engine. I've got a 2.3 version out of a 505 but am wondering if there are any other Peugeot engines have the same bellhousing pattern as the XD ?
I'm considering fitting something more "modern", but not common rail, during a full restoration - or should I stick with the XD ?

That engine was used in lots of vehicles such as sherpa vans, camper vans, various fords, etc. but that's not much use as you want to use a different engine with the same bell housing pattern.

I'm not sure about RWD layouts but Peugeot use the same stud pattern in all their FWD layouts ie 205, 309, 405 petrol & diesel all the same.

A good replacement for that 2.1 would be the 1.9 turbo XUD engine as fitted to the 405 or the 2.1 turbo XUD from an early 406. Both fairly simple engines with few electronics but I'm not sure about the bell housing fitment.

I did the XUD conversion into an suzuki SJ with an pilot g box. Great for off road but the gearing is crap for riad use. Like driving a piolt infact. But more umph as its the turbo. Super engines though and esdy to set up.

The problem I've got is the Mahindra has a 4 speed KTM90 gearbox so not exactly a common item ! The transfer box is a Dana 18 and whilst plenty of gearbox adapters they are all US gearbox / engine bias.
In an ideal world I'd like a 5 speed gearbox as well (I've got a mobility auto clutch conversion so auto gearbox not a necessary - but would be nice !)

Stick a vw pd in it 1.9 130 hp or more, chipped ultra reliable and run on veg oil

the 1.9 vw PD is a good motor the 130 hp imo is the motor of choice. not sure how they fair with veg oil long term tho

Yeah mine only done 170000, so I will have to let you know when its done some miles. But I do drive it steady----------- it will do a steady 125mph. That is no bull btw

Wifes Bora with the 130 engine has 160k on when sold still pulled like a train and did 50MPG

We have a Fabia with a 1.4 TDi which I assume is a 3/4 PD engine. 135,000 miles and still returns 50 mpg no matter how driven with a lot more on a run.

We had a 1989/90 Pug 309 GRDT with the smaller turbodiesel (1700-something), had 130,000 on when we bought it and last I heard it was up around 180K. Sipped like a priest around town and went like a train on the Autoroute. Piece of cake to change the cambelt, nothing ever went wrong, every car should have that engine (or the 2.2L petrol from the Renault 25 ).

i've a 90 hp pd with 290K on the clock but that was about all done at that. the current one is on 165 K, 130 bhp in a passat 4 motion estate was doing 40 mpg round the lanes but its in need of some tlc atm
