thats a good question for i had lads here about 4 yrs ago who painted my sheds, not the traveling sales man type but id say they were related all the same.
anyways, i got him to paint the sheds vandyke brown to match some new sheds i had put up, it was a good job for what he was charging in fairness but 2 yrs later and my vandyke brown is now a very dark grey, closer to black than anything.
so next time i was plannin on hiring a lift and a sprayer and doing it myself, but ive often wondered what paint to use.
i suppose the right paint if it could be found could be a fortune so you might have to accept less but the problem with shed paint from what i see is you havnt a clue what your really getin or maybe i just need to read more into it.

afaik the good type creceote can still be got but only by registered painters iirc.
that might be the law in the south of ireland as quick but i thought it was for the uk when i read up on it a while ago.
the stuff you buy in the hardware id say you could drink for its good for damn all.

mind you, i dont know where id ask here tbh, there isnt exactly any paint wholesalers round but id say with some looking one could be found.
i actually have about 400ltrs of the old stuff here, i bought it off a lad a few years ago for humble money.
altho there's somewhat of a catch to it, it seems to have settled in the original drums it was in and i ended up with 3/4 of it black creosote and 1/4 of it is like a light grey globby substance.
i dont know if i mixed it up again would it hold or just settle again.
anyways, that ill be cured with a test so best not to go off topic in addjunkie's thread, yet anyways.

Cant really use creosote as there are animals in contact with 3 sides of the shed. Im looking for easy to apply quick to apply, dont want to undercoat or prepare, just brush off cob webs and paint. Fairly large area too, 40 x 20....oh cheap too would be a bonus as would self applying.

Avoid the water based shed paints, they are rubbish. The guy in the paint store said you might as well paint on cold tea, it just colours the wood & does nothing to preserve it.
Cuprinol did a few good oil based fence paints. I used this on some new d-rail fencing & it's lasting quite well.

But I've just noticed that it's now a water based paint, the stuff I used was solvent based.
The guy in the shop did say that they were changing it so I bought a few extra tins.
So I don't really know where to point you as oil based fence paint is now hard to find.
The best preservative of all is a mixture of 2/3 genuine creosote and 1/3 waste engine oil, preferably from a diesel engine as it's blacker. Very messy to apply but will last longer than anything and preserves the wood.

You need a quick drying water based paint like the one I mentioned. I use it on plywood duck and goose decoys that get exposed to saltwater and estuarine mud and rub together in sacks
The only issue I have had is when I applied it over wood preserver ( cuprinol 5 star)

As said the water based stuff is useless especially the coloured variety. It doesn't matter who's you buy be it Cuprinol, B&Q's own brand whatever.
In my my garden many years ago I made new side fences and later front fence panels and thinking it was ok I at first bought Cuprinol.
Within two years I had wood rotting from the inside out.
The horizontal 4X2" timber I used came from a reclaimed timber place in Todmorden and was cut from old mill beam's and was heavy even for 4X2" and was deemed to be Pitch Pine.
In a little over two year I could push my finger into it.
I also used some of that wood for another project which had Original Bartolene Creosote put on it and its as solid today as when it was made.
The water based stuff locks moisture in the timber so hence the rotting from the inside out. It doesn't allow the wood to breath properly.
While Creosote appears to water proof at first it is because of the white spirit or whatever is used that evaporates and eventually dries out.
Creosote does not stop the wood from getting wet but merely acts as an anti fungal so to speak.
I use Bartolene Creosote as much as I can but it has got stupidly expensive now. In fact the last two 25Ltr tins I got came from Clifton Timber while I was up in Driffield east Yorkshire and
cost me £109.03p in May 2013. I always buy the Dark as well as it has more Tar in it.
Bartolene also make the Creosote substitute and that is excellent too. In fact its hard to tell the difference between the two.
I've used other brands in plastic tubs and I may as well just have urinated on the fence every time I needed a pee.
I tend to re coat every two years but that is for the most part the same for all preservatives.
Another type of treatment especially if Animals are involved is Tung Oil.
A natural oil taken from the nut or seed if you will of a tree in China.
There are youtube vids on this oil.
It isn't cheap either but this link is one of the cheaper suppliers in the UK.

thats the gear seen it on ebay too actually but that price is better mrs aint keen on me doing the new fence in it and old oil though
