Cheap cuttoff saw vs expensive

Hi Guys,

I am looking at buying a cutoff saw as most my work will be with RHS/SHS. I am still a noob so dont have any experience to base it on.

Is this the best cutting tool for me to get without spending heaps of cash? and what are the benefits of spending more? is it jut longer life or does it affect the end result?

I have one the same, sold by one of the cheap supermarkets we have over here, it's proved to be a good bit of kit, cuts fast, as true as I want and the blades last well.
In the general price range of saws it's the cheapest of the cheap.

Thanks, I don't mind investing if there are true gains, but for my intermittent use, if I can get good results with a cheap item i will.

I have used all sorts of abrasive saws. They all do the job. They are all good when new!

The problem I have with them. Is when they get knocked about on site or in the back of my truck. Then the accuracy is lost!

i consider them the work of the devil but thats just my opinion.
the one i have here has had a good rest of late,
for the last 10 yrs id say but i have better ways of cutting so its a last resort here.

but as for cutting and cheap, it ill tick them two boxes.
i dont know if there is a pile of difference in the cheap and dear versions, buy a cheap one and if you wear it out buy a good one.

what would you recommend? Need to be able cut RHS at 90* to 45* angles.

what id recommend id be a lot dearer than a cut off saw so you might be better off sticking with the idea you have.

what about the raptor saws from the evolution range, ive never used one but plenty on here have them id say.
its a cold cut blade saw, similar to the kind of blade that id be in a circular saw.
i dont know much about them other than that, but i know youd be cutting out the sparks at least.


or the likes of this, i had an old version of it for yonks when i was younger and when you know no better its a grand little saw.

remember tho, with any of these cheaper saws you will always need to turn the work instead of the saw for angle cuts which isnt a problem on short to medium lths, but 20' of box wont be as civil.
but as i said earlier, you'll pay for that luxury.

I wouldn't say the Raptor saw is a cold cut saw, it's a high speed circular saw with a TCT blade.
A cold cut saw normally uses a HSS saw blade and has a very slow RPM, usually driven through a gearbox.
They are two very different beasts.

your right my mistake in wording, i was describing the evo saw as evo describe it as a cold cut saw, in the sense that when it has the cut done the steel is cold but as for it being an industry spec cold cut saw its not, as you say they are geared down.

ive never actually cut with one but if i was buying id buy a rage 2 before a chop saw any day personally.

indeed upon a quick tube search here is a fairly unbiased trial of the two machines.
tbh when you see it, its a no brainer to me, or so far anyways.
i thought originally he wasnt lying on the dewalt to show it up but it was just about fit to cut into the pipe by the looks of it, Wattage lads, Wattage....
nice bit of heavy wall pipe he has there tho...

Just so happens there is one of these for sale in the local trading for $500AUD, which is about 50% off. Might have to take a look, and consult the minister of finance.

i actually have the jefferson version of it, which is the stickers just, everything else is the same as its the same saw just re branded, the one i bought was the best of them for the money imo, it cost me £1050 at the time with a free 25ltrs of soluble oil.
its the only bit of jefferson tack i have here, im not a fan but i looked at a lot of them and most seemed to be cummin out of the same few holes.
but its been faultless for me and i have it 6-7 yrs now, times it is a bit too small for me but thats only when id go to cut 10x5 rsj at 60 dgs other than that it can handle everything else under that size.
if i was going again id go bigger with the sliding vice option so you can clamp either side of the blade but since the plasma came about the need on me to change it up is a lot less.

if its going for $500 i wouldnt miss it if its the same one, its a steal at that hi.
