DC TIG - Migatronic 200hp

I'm half heartedly looking for a TIG set to play around with when I get some free time.

Basically, I don't want to spend much more than 500, and although ac/dc would be nice, I know that the ac/dc machines I can get for 500 are probably rubbish

However, even a DC TIG would be better than none, and I quite like the idea of "decent used" kit.

I spotted this Migatronic 200hp on ebay going for 470 - I know the listing will end soon, but looking at history, it gets relisted. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111903172607?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT


I'm guessing something like this would be better than a cheaper chinese TIG, and might even keep its value, rather than spending 500 on an r-tech etc and have it drop in value by half before year 1.


I've already got Argon etc, so don't need that, just a welder and some rods.


Any thoughts?

It looks as if it's a reputable seller, but it's in Bulgaria, which would put me off a bit. What's this business of it being resold periodically?

Ideally you want to see a second hand welder working.

I'm sure you're right in that a second hand top brand machine designed as a quality item to begin with is likely to be a better proposition than a new cheap one, but you can still get caught out as a circuit board goes up in smoke and can't be replaced or is dear.

Have you thought about something like this for your money?

The Bulgaria bit is a bit off putting, yes... The listing says Guildford, which is around the corner relatively speaking, but looking at their web site it does look like Bulgaria. Having said that, their eBay feedback is excellent, and for much higher value machines too

Hmm, the problem is I only have 60 amps to play with for the whole house, otherwise I'd probably get something like that, yes

I suppose I could run something like that on a 32 amp socket, but I'm not sure if it would even start on that, or if the inrush current would trip the fuse on a weedy fuse like that

sadly not, well not apart from my little rotary converter, but that wont run a welder

Not in your budget im afraid , it's all less than 12 month old EWMs on the hire/demo fleet. I might have to start putting the GYS ones on so we can sell them off more reasonably after say 12 months or so as there seems to be a lot of demand for affordable but good quality used kit that's not Chinese in origin.
