Countersink Recommendations

Can anyone recommend a good brand/set of countersinks.
To be used on plain steel maybe, want quality so I was thinking of dormer but for cobalt bits they're silly money.
Anyone tried the Sherwood ones? I have some of their HSS jobber drills and they seem okay.

I just buy a correct size one whenever I need one
BTW you can sharpen them. Some say you can't but you certainly can the ones I get

Yeah i buy and use sherwood bits and find them good, i'd try the countersinks too.

i was after a set a while ago and after a bit of googling i found these ruko ones, they are sharped in such a way it reduces chatter, or so they say at least but i have ruko bits here and there is nothing wrong with them.
i was all set to buy them when a new set of old english made ones came up on e bay, i got 6 of them all new for £25 so i never did get the ruko ones.

anyways, if interested, iirc this was the cheapest i found for them.

I have a 5 piece coated set from Cromwells sherwood own brand for hmmmmm 4 years plus i guess and they do fine. As good as any other i have used in my working life.

J and l/ Msc are running some offers in their flyers on Csk's at the moment. Page 1 Ruko set, page 2 individual Csk's. last page (32) Dormer Sets. You will need to do a price compare to see how good the offer is from msc.

Cutwel also have a good range http://www.cutwel.co.uk/search-results?keywords=countersink The Karnasch range may be an unknown name to many but the quality of their milling cutters is pretty superb and beyond that of off the shelf standards.


I have used a few of the ruko csk's and it has always seemed a bit odd to me, they tend to grind the flutes back from the centre line far more than they should. What this effectively means is the tip of the csk is ground away so they are no good for small holes where as any other brand can do small holes for the given Csk size. Fine if you are not doing small holes. The quality of the steel is fine and the quality of the grinding is fine but it seems to me they don't actually know how to grind to the book and all the other big brands out there cant be wrong. Horse for courses i guess.

iirc the angle they were grinding it back at was one of their selling points but that dosent sound great, ive never used one tbh but in the selection of different makers i have here in csk's they all prety much leave the same finish so i cant see ruko re inventing the wheel too much.

Any new suppliers/makes/offers to add to this thread?

I need to countersink about half a dozen M8 clearance holes in convex mild steel handrails on a set of railings in a week or so, and I only have crap csk bits available at the moment.

I'll need them quite quickly, so UK suppliers only I imagine.

What can you recommend?

Been using sherwood cobalt countersinks. Have to say they do a good job, a very good job actually. My only advice would be to buy them from the cromwell ebay, as they are cheaper there than there online shop, and over the counter.

I went to our local Cromwell's today, and they quoted me £48 for a 16mm (I think). I'll check out their eBay site in a mo.

This is the set that I got. Seems like the price has increased. But I'd still be happy paying that. The smaller set goes upto 16mm and is £49 I think.
