Found this on the road last night, no idea what it is. 8.5cm long 1.25cm in diameter. Suggestions so far include a key

I think its a locking pin.
The slot in the top would be for a wire or clip to lock it in place.

I've found goodies on roads as well. A heavy welding cable with electrode holder, steel beam, load of cable ties...

Yes deffo a clevis or hinge pin. Likely off a small trailer tail drop or something

I think its the centre pivot from a ratchet strap that's fallen apart and dropped off the back of a lorry(no pun intended).

The left hand ones are on the left side of the road as we drive on the left, you need to go to the continent to get the right hand ones.

ah - see? It just needed some lateral thinking! Can't believe I didn't think of that before

You're all wrong; it's clearly a sprommet. Normally fits between the wangleflange and the interossiter. Most people make the mistake of installing them with a left-hand thread screwdriver when what you should really use is a 1" square drive 5mm socket... that's probably why it fell off
