Which bench grinder

Both look like decent spec’d machines.

depends on what your sharpening. fast speed single or 3 phase-both as good. a slow speed grinder for woodworking tools

surely the 3-phase would be better if you have 3Ph in the workshop. You also have the option of running it off a VFD.

plug in- 240v better- plug it in anywhere u like in workshop

I've got an Axminster trade grinder, first one I got I think a capacitor went and it wouldn't start, took it back in and they replaced it no problem, second one the light is stopped working for a bit, couldn't be bothered taking it back and now it's working again so must just be a loose connection. Seems fine for the money and since they're just down the road from me I generally choose them over the Internet since they're really helpful and don't quibble about returns! Not really sure any of that helps with which one to buy though

Ive had an Elektra Beckum for 15yrs. Very well balanced, which is often overlooked in a bench grinder.

I am rather embarrassed by mine
It's a cheap one from one of the diy sheds. My FIL dropped it off at our place over ten years ago saying these were so cheap on sale I bought two so you can have the other

It's not the best but it's taken some abuse and regularly sharpens drills up to an inch down to 3 mm

I chucked my old cheap one so after one that will last me years. The other option is a used Viceroy with a built in stand. I think it has a separate motor which is good so if it dies can just replace and probably just replace the bearings on the grinder. Hmm I think I just talked myself into the Viceroy.

I've got a metabo single phase in work that is very quiet and smooth. I would imagine a three phase would be even nicer.
If I had 3 phase I would use it.

I have a wolf 3 phase grinder . before-I had a converter I put a pulley-and belt on it and a separate single phase motor. now i have a converter I wired it in to see if 3 -phase motor works and it does theres no difference between the 2 of them

a converter and not an inverter i take it.

i have a inverter on an ironworker here, just for handiness really as it saves starting the genny but she isnt fit to punch her largest hole in 12mm plate on the single phase inverter but when i plug her into the 3ph she dose it with ease.
i suppose you cant have your cake and eat it so its not bad for what i use it for.
id imagine the converter is closer to true 3ph.

its a static converter. there not the best of things but it gets the job done

I have three: a Wolf (with the noisiest bearings known to man) running a fine AlOx and a medium silicon carbide for sharpening carbide lathe tools, a SIP with coarse and medium AlOx and a Nu-Tool spinning a polishing mop and a wire wheel. They're all 1-ph 240V and none is any better than the others (although the NuTool's 'guards' are the most laughable).
That said the Wolf is probably 30 years old and was used commercially, whether the others will last as long, who knows?
