2K via aerosol, or 1K cellulose aerosol...?

So, in the last few weeks I've finally given up on using acrylic aerosols. Much to my disappointment and dismay 1k acrylic is simply to soft for a professional finish. I gave up on the lacquer and decided just to finish with a base coat, sadly even that proved to be too soft when it came to the final stages of polishing. I tried super thin coats, leaving the parts for several weeks at room temp and again the same end result, marring and burrs actually caused when polishing by pad or microfibre.

So, I'm in two minds. Firstly i'm giving a little credence and thought to spraying in cellulose. Can anyone comment on this type of paint? I haven't used it in years and when I did I was but a youngster, who's automotive ownership was that of several radio controlled cars! Firstly since I don't use my Camaro very much (2000 miles per annum) and it lives it's life under a cover most of the time, U.V. damage shouldn't be a problem? Plus I don't mind polishing the car twice a year.

Secondly, and most probably the proper route, 2K. I could if I put my mind to it, get hold of the necessary safety gear (air fed mask etc.) and have access to a safe remote location to spray it. However the 2K I'm thinking of is via aerosol. Does anyone have any experience with 2K aerosol paint and how it worked out?

Price wise there really isn't much difference between aerosol 2K and cellulose. Ease of use goes to 1K cellulose since I'll be able to spray in my garage. I know cellulose is a soft paint but is it harder than this 1K acrylic I've been using?

as you suggest, aerosol is not the best finish compared to 2k and basecoat is neither a finish coat or polishable.. your best bet if you cant gear up for 2k would be to use your base coats a d use a gun to apply 1k clear.

ive used the standox 2k aerosols....great stuff as good as what you'd use in a gun , would reccomend

what size spray fan do they get steve? not much good for panel work im sure

4-5" at a guess , if you can afford them you can easily do a door or wing

only bad thing is they cost me about £18 each lol

I can't remember from your previous posts what it is on your Camaro that you wanted to spray. If it's just a few bits like mirrors you might be able to get them done quite cheaply at a body shop if they are already off the car.

If you wanted to try cellulose in aerosol form, I understand the auto paint you get in pound shops (usually just black and white) is cellulose.

Agree I've done blow ins with some repairs I've done on the wife's beetle and tbh 2k in a can was fine this is paint that's been sitting in a 1ltr can in the shed that I had popped to a spray so the paint was old plus the original car paints had a fair few years to weather a little only trouble with 2k is getting the heat there to cure so it was a sunny day only job lol

I had some made to 1k also when I was doing a few bits in winter time and that was noticeable darker from the same stuff that was 2k was made from

thats more down to who mixed it than the product...when youre mixing a small amount a slight slip up with a mixer makes a big differance comapred to mixing 5 ltrs

can only find solid colours in germany/europe...although the price isnt any worse , email them they will mix any colour code or do a clear over base kit

if you do decide to go with 2k cans , check what youre buying as some scammy sellers put 2k in the description and theyre not , true 2k will always have a button or pin underneath to release the hardner

Oh right I wasn't sure if it was because it was a 2k paint that was made in to 1k as the 2 1k cans was darker compared to the 2 2k that I had made so 4 cans at the same time so would have thought there shouldn't be any diff and from a local car paint supplier that knows there stuff

2k and 1k auto paints are completely different animals. 1K will air dry, 2k unless it has the hardener will never dry.
Colour mixing is not a straight forward process although it uses a formulation, it doesn't necessarily make it the right shade. The only way to do it in a pro shop is to test a card and adjust it. Takes a good eye though.

I don't have access to a spray gun, and sadly nor do I know how to use one.

i brought a cheap hplv spray gun from lidl it is way better than a rattle can let me tell ya, read the destructions and it aint to difficult to use

Thanks for the tip regarding where to purchase cellulose aerosols, a little surprising though!

I have toyed with the idea of taking the parts to a local body shop, and as you say it probably won't cost a huge amount. However I do like the prospect of painting the parts myself. Despite my recent encounter with 1K acrylic aerosols I did learn quite a lot and enjoyed the process, depsite the disappointing end results.

Gonna need a compressor for that, and once again I don't have that either (or materials to practice on). Surely a good finish via 2K aerosol can be acquired via wet sanding and polishing thereafter?

I don't have access to professional heating equipment, would indoor temperatures suffice and/or regular heater?

Yes, I have heard there's a few con artists out there regarding proper 2K aerosols. Thanks for the links though How did you find the SprayMax items?
