You can read a maximum of 10amps DC, set it to 10A, black lead in common, red lead in 10A and the probes in SERIES with your load.

ive got my battery charger running on an electrolysis tank, how do i do it in series?
Can you not read AC amps?

Put the red probe on the plus of the charger and the black on the lead to the anode, the current comes out of the charger, through the meter and then into the anode.

Doesn't look like that meter can - the gauge only has settings for DC.
You can get meters that read AC current, tho.

your multimeter only reads dc amps as far as I can see. Would need to be connected in series ie multimeter leads form part of the circuit.

Not on that meter because it says DC next to the terminal.
Disconnect the + wire from the bath and connect it to the 10A DC terminal then connect the black lead (COM) to where the +ve was connected to on your bath. Set the switch on the meter to 10A then switch the power supply on.
Are you sure the bath isn't taking more than 10A?

In Ammeter mode the meter is just like a piece of wire. If you use it like a volt meter (in parallel) you are creating a dead short which at best will blow the fuse.
You need to use it in series by connecting one lead to your + supply and the other lead to the load (where the + supply would normally be connected).

You can but not with that meter, the solid line with dots under it next to the A range shows its DC. If it was AC it would have a wavy line.

i dont know thats why i was trying to test it. do you think it would be more that 10 amps? if so should i not try it?
I was doubting myself...lol I had not looked at the actual meter.

I would expect that a draper meter will have a fuse inline with the current probe socket, so I would presume that the worst case is that this fuse would blow.
Edit: The meter explicitly says it's unfused, so disregard the above!
But I'm not buying you a new meter if I'm wrong

I done it anyway and its reading 1.90 amps at 10 volts.

Yep, that sounds good.
Really delicate things will want a lower current but significantly longer in the rank (maybe as low as 0.3 amps for a week).
More current won't help if you were wondering, it's just a waste of electricity and won't make it any faster (I experimented with 20 amps, just made the water warm
).
