cutting disc longevity

do 3mm cutting discs last longer than 1mm discs

i have 2x 1mm discs left but have a fair bit of cutting to do today...probably around 8M in 4mm steel. my 1mm discs arent going to get that done but i have a few blackspur 3mm discs that i bought when they were 5p for 3 in a local hardware type shop, have been using them as grinding discs but still have 5 unused ones.

will they last longer than the 1mm ones? i know it will take longer to cut and obviously produce a wider cut but that doesnt matter today, not in a rush and am not cutting out anything fine

I have not used 3mm discs for a long time now, Not too bad on a 9" grinder but a real pain on a 41/2" or 5", The 1mm discs last longer if they are allowed to cut with just gentle forward pressure, Try to cut too quickly and they don't generally last very long, I would go and get some more 1mm before starting the job,

the better quality disks also last longer. My current favourites are the dronco evolution 1mm as they seem to strike a reasonable balance between longevity and price

I tend to feel that thinner disks wear out faster, but doubt if it actually the case. What certainly does matter is the quality, they are not all equal.

well i put it to the test...brand new 3mm disc managed to cut from the top weld to the bottom weld on a 47kg bottle and it took a while...gentle pressure letting the disc do the work...changed to a 1mm disc and it did the same cut on the other side fo the bottle and nearly a quarter of the way around the bottom of the bottle too...and it was a lot quicker

1 mm discs might be better for the grinder too as taking away a third of the material is much less taxing on the motor so it may last longer.

I use 1mm Tyrolit discs and they last really well. I'd stick with 1mm, thicker take longer.

It's been a long time since I used thick disks. I think I stopped when I found thin ones were available...
I only have a few thick ones for times when I need a thick cut or just as spares. It's pretty rare I use them, I don't enjoy grinding so why make it take longer?

Thick cutting discs are good for opening up root gaps on pipe and plate when they have pulled closer together whilst tacking, other Than that......it's thin discs all the time for me

Yes sorry lol, 3M cubitron III to be exact. Best disks I've ever used.

how thin are they and what sort of price do they fetch? im fress out of discs so looking for some to buy to be delivered early next week

I've had them in 1mm, 3mm and normal grinding discs.

From Cromwell's they are £2 a piece so a pack of 25 would be about £50 less any bulkbulk discount

-thick disks are no better than thin ones infact there not as good. a thicker one has to cut twice as much metal than needed they cost more and they work your grinder harder

i use parweld 1mm discs off ebay and they seem to be really long lasting . forget about the clarke ones they are crap

lol I have 20 pairs of snips and 14 pairs- of pliers made by Elliot lucas identical to knipex 8 quid a pair and just as good- ive leant that there not there for long so u have-- to go for it
