Welding flame

Hi,

Could any one advise me what the problem is please ,
When welding today, there was just a flame with no metal being laid,
I stopped welding thinking that the weld wire wasn't coming through, but it was , ?

I also noted that the wire had light corrosion on it, I no this is a problem, but why .

How can you stop the corrosion from happening, I might only weld once a month, if that,

So if you pull the trigger with the Torch in the air away from the work piece, wire feeds correctly?

Sounds like the corrosion was slowing the wire down, try unwinding the reel past the corrosion, blow the liner out aswell and try again

Brad , yes I pull the trigger and the wire comes out

Snooper how do you stop the corosion,

The other thing could it happen if the machine was to hot, or something,
As the problem arose after I was welding for 10 min, or maybe when I come to a section of wire
That was corroded

Take the reel off the machine and store it in your house somewhere warm and dry. If you store it in a damp garage it's going to corrode.

The only way I know of to stop the wire corroding is to keep it warm and dry. Try keeping it in the airing cupboard.

If the machine was too hot it should have cut out until it cooled down

Put the wire reel in a plastic bag with a couple of desiccant bags

Rust doesnt weld and it will damage the liner as the surface becomes rough​

The rust on your wire will have slowed it down coming through the liner and contact tip, I would replace my torch liner as it will probably be clogged with rust

Do you have a compressor, take the contact tip off and blow the liner out with an airline before you change it unnecessarily. If the weld is just balling up the wire and dropping off it sounds like a setting up problem. I've used wire with "a bit of rust" and it still welded.

And whatever you do, don't be tempted to give the reel a squirt of WD40 to stop it rusting. Bin there, done that and thrown 15kg of wire in the scrap pile.

One more tip......... Don't let go of the wire when removing it from machine ....it may spring back and birds nest up!

Keep hold of it until you can secure it on rim of reel...

There is no "may", it will unravel like the Tasmanian devil. I got to my mate's house just as it was happening to him once and still laugh about it but he was heartbroken. You can not roll it back on either he found

ive re-wound a .7kg reel once...wouldn't like to do it on a 5kg reel though...

Just so it's clear in my mind, when you have just a flame your wire isn't coming through

The wire isn't heavily corroded just spasmodically on the reel

Putting a and b together could be the wire screw down (tensioner) not right

It’s more like this:-

If there’s no wire coming through, you won’t get an arc. The arc depends on the wire feeding through the torch, as quickly as it’s getting melted into the workpiece.

Having any amount of corrosion on the wire is going to have a bad effect, as said before because the rust won’t melt, but it’ll also clog up the feed rollers, and some of the finely ground up rust dust will carry on up into the liner inside the torch lead, and then eventually clog the tip area, too.

Even when you’ve welded your way through the grotty (even just slightly) rusted stuff, and into the clean wire, there’ll probably still be rust, grinding dust etc in the liner - so it’d be as well to try to blow it out using an air-line, and make sure there’s no gritty debris around the wire-feed rollers.

Cranking up the feed-roller tension might eventually grind all the stuff down more finely, but it’s much better gone. You may not have to re-tension it at all, when the rollers are properly clean.

Like snooper said, it’ll be slowing the wire down, with all this added friction increasing the drag on the wire.

If it’s cleaned before the clean wire goes through it, there should be quite a noticeable difference.
If the garage or wherever you store your stuff isn’t completely dry, you’d be much better off storing all your welding consumables indoors - always!
