im not a plumber, but id be handy, so after a lot of reading up and videos i plumbed my own house, in copper, with soldered joints and every bend bent i may add..only need to clean about 10mm more than the fitting depth mate.... this is how I was taught to do it by a plumber.
I asked if it was really necessary to clean bright new fittings and pipe, his answer was no , not as long as you don't mind it leaking.....
never heat the joint, heat about 1 to diameter away from the fitting and take the heat off as soon as the solder flows, then just tickle the flame over the joint to make sure it flows right round, flame on one side, solder on the other, if the solder melts it is plenty hot enough
usually only 2 things ****** a solder joint, not clean and too much heat, lead free solder is much less tolerant of overheating than the old leaded solders
best torch is the rothenburger quickfire, strong, reliable and easy... i have had 2 in 20 years... used to get used almost daily at one time

i probably spent more on the tools to do it that what would of paid a plumber to do it in the long run but i did it my way as they say.
To state the obvious, you are using flux I hope?
haI once had to pay to plumb in the gas to my combi bolier because you had to be Corgi registered to do this. Unfortunately I wasn't around while they did it, it looked like somebody had thrown the pipe against the wall so I re-did it myself, it was less hassle than inviting them back to do it properly and I had the necessary bit of paper. We had just moved into the area an knew nobody, 15 years on I now have a set of contacts for most trades that I trust to do a good job without watching them like a hawk.
just used pre soldered fittings, now i use compression and lashings of tape.....i,m not very good with DIY![]()
