If you are using it as a play bike only, a modern 4T isnt for you. Unless you maintain them properly, or ride very gently indeed, major problems with motors are almost certain. 2T is the way to go for play biking, or for competition if you want to race without pretty substantial running costs.
Some 4T owners if they are unlucky can end up with a suspension and wheels after a major blow up, as its sometimes more expensive to repair than bikes worth.

Firstly you have legal recourse as it's not fit for purpose. Regardless of who you bought it off.
Secondly never NEVER. Buy a MX bike without first asking how an oil change is done, if the seller doesn't know or doesn't carry it out correctly. WALK.
If you get past that. Check the oil. IT SHOULD BE CLEAN EVEN IF IT NEEDS CHANGING.

Did you check the oil is been pumped round. You do this by hand loosening off the oil line to the head, after an oil change, if you haven't got oil coming from the line, that would indicate a problem somewhere.

I would guess a properly done full rebuild is likely to be around £2k, so bear that in mind, and dont cut corners as you will almost certainly have problems if you do.

The motor had most likely thrown a chain, along with no oil changes*. When I striped it the only parts I didn't replace were the gearbox, and cams.
I even had to replace the cases as when the chain was thrown it had bent the counter balance shaft. Cracking the main case between the main bearing and c/balance bearing housing.
I'd only just bought it, and I got the dealer to pay for all the parts.

I put a chain and rebuild the top 25hr ago all the clearances are still good. The pump does look like its picked up a little but the oil filter looks mint. I've done oil change ages every 3 rides.
I've had the bike over a year so the only person to blame is me lol

You really can't check an oil pump visually, you need to test either by pressure gauge, or on the bench, a good pump [with a little oil] will when turned have a good back pressure. £90 rings a bell, expensive, but a fraction of what a blown motor will cost

It's amazing how we've got to the point where 2t bikes last longer than 4t. I had a Ktm 250 exc 2 stroke and an sxf250 4 stroke, never an issue with the 2 banger, it got the crap kicked out of it pretty much every night in the summer, going laning after work etc , the 4t was a bag of crap, every time it went out it needed something sorting when you go home, and valve clearances!!!! You get about 20 minutes where it's fine and will fire when hot and after that it's roulette time

The 4T thing came about as a result of greenwash bs and was a bad thing for end users, as it made racing far more expensive, and I think has reduced the value of used bikes quite a bit. Get the feeling that with air filter changes, and gear box oil changed once in a while a 500cc 2T would easily do a year with no major problems, whereas a 4T with regular use will have cost maybe £2k or more in maintenance.

Absolutely. I used to race cr500's and other than piston, rings and the odd rebore, change gear oil every session. That was a bomb proof engine.
The crf450 however was a major headache. Valve timing every other race, top end then complete engine rebuilds on the hour. Way too much agg
