Its horses for courses really, But i would rather a 300 amp Oxford stick welder over a 300 mig if i was after a proper super-strong joint.

Mig monkeys! MMA is better than Mig!, Tig is harder than MMA! Blah blah blah.
All crap. Each process has its merits and each has its difficulties to overcome in order to truly master it.
A true "welder" is a master of each of the 3 processes and knows when to choose and use one over the other. End of. Of course in some applications one will prove superior than the other two.
It's a shame the same old arguements keep popping up.

I don't think it's so much a case of 'x is always better than y', more that for most people at an average level things are quite clear. MIG is easily picked up and used to make a pretty weld at fairly basic level. MIG with gas shielding doesn't work when the wind is blowing it away. And MIG does require a higher amperage than MMA does to weld the same thickness of material.
Yes, of course there can be a lot more to MIG than pull the trigger and push. And yes, there are high power MIG's with all kinds of different things than the kind the majority on here will use.
But this thread is about some chap who thinks his 200a MIG will produce a stronger weld than an mma setup and that it's much more skilled - and also that the gas won't get blown away in the wind. For the circumstances/applications being discussed this is wrong, and that is what this thread is about.

The caperbilities of using MMA in outdoor situations are well known, it wins over Tig and Mig handsdown in that circumstance. Tig is by far better for fine work, Mig is by far faster. But my arguement is that a proper welder would already know that and wouldn't contemplate Mig in a situation where MMA or indeed Tig is the obvious way to go. It shouldn't have anything to do with ease of use or one perceived as being stronger than the other.

Indeed, you are quite right - a good welder should know which to use and not make any choices based on ease of use or silly ideas of which is stronger.
It's the blanket statements that MIG is fine outdoors, requires more skill and is stronger that is the issue.

Was never a subscriber to the MIG monkey train of thought, with MMA you look at the rod packet, it tells you what amps to use. With MIG you need to get the balance right between volts and wire feed speed.
I was brought up on MMA and TIG welding offshore stuff and only learnt MIG because I had to, never a big fan but can appreciate the level of skill needed to do it correctly, Matt is right on the button with his comments

A lot on here are hobby welders with an interest in restoring/repairing rotten old cars. For this purpose MIG is clearing more suited than all the other processes, in the same way MMA or TIG is the process of choice for certain applications.

Agreed, Matt. No matter the process, mig/mag, fcaw-ss or gs, the man/woman pulling the trigger, turn on the magic. Many do this well, many do it badly.

Anyone seen the YT vid of an idiot Yank who built an HD chopper frame using anchor chain? Welded the links of the chain together, but unfortunately met his maker when riding the finished bike standing up on the seat.
