Primer, or not, under Rustoleum ?

I want to paint all my large automotive equipment as a winter project. That is couple large trolley jacks, 5-6 old screw type bottle jacks, numerous sets of axle stands, engine crane, ramps, etc.
I'll remove loose paint (not much) and any rust before coating with Rustoleum.
I've never used this paint before so am going on reputation rather than experience of it being a tough coating.
In stock I've a 5ltr tin of industrial red oxide so wonder if it's worth applying that before the top coat ?
Views / opinions ?

If you want a pretty red colour for the undercoat then yes. Otherwise, for a resilient finish, you need Epoxy. I would then put your choice of finish over that, or tint it and leave it be.

Most of these paints work better without undercoat in my experience unless it's not bear steel

id say it works better over some kind of primer , mist on a coat of etch if its metal

if you havent bought it already the cheapie shops have red 151 paint for £1 or so , it stinks but its pretty tough once its gone off , does take a few days mind

the rustoleum is a decent drop of paint , but its not super tough or anything just use whatever is cheapest or get some 2k if you can amd want it tough
