Red diesel.

For a good while I have been looking for a reasonable safe cruiser type boat, inboard diesel, either shaft driven, or stern drive. Well the baws burst, reading todays paper, November 1st, red derv will no longer be available to boaters, no 65p a litre, full whack!! Dreams shattered

I quoted 65p as per paper article, I had nae idea close to 70p based on 6000ltrs!!

I agree, a reclaim system is only another way for guvs to on be a nice earner as you describe Snowie. Getting to be even more difficult to sustain a living in this country, bet there will be a glut of nice wee boats on the market when this kicks in!

I was thinking plan B, sail boat, no doubt wind will be taxed sooner than later.....

In NZ, it's all at the cheap rate, but if you run a derv vehicle, you have to buy tax miles, which cover the extra cost. I realise it would be a bugger to police in the UK, but the business claim-back will be a nightmare too!

the best is its on a rolling 3 or 4 p a month at the moment expect mid 70s by august, Its just bloody staggering, barrel price fell again last week but the refined price keeps going up, someone (ie OPEC and the government) is laugthing...

BTW just to add more gloom heating oil (kerosene) is now over the price of Cherry so I'm really looking forward to next winter

Just as a contrast Baghdad pump price 7pl was speaking to a guy who's just done a tour there.. work that out???

Kerosene has just dropped in price here, it's now 58p/litre for 2000 litres. Red diesel is also just under 60p.

I was speaking to a friend of mine who runs a commercial boat and he was telling me that they are getting rid of the marine red diesel, all diesel will soon be white and only available to commercial customers. The stuff he is buying now from the fuelling barge is white. Seems strange to me as it is blatantly going to find its way into road vehicles.

Until recently I ran a commercial dive boat with a petrol engine. I claimed back the fuel duty (51p per litre) once a year by filling out a single page A4 form, you just tally up the amount of fuel you used and work out the duty. The cheque would normally take a couple of weeks to come back.

how many people are being paid with all this pay now and reclaim nonsense. That seems to be Gordon Brown's favourite way, no wonder the government payroll (and their fat pensions) is so bloated. Non productive, all of it!!

No more customs people strung out along the various M way along with police, allowing them to chase up other avenues. of course more desk jockeys will be required to clear up the claims side associated with bona-fide business's claiming back extra duty paid by them, but what effect will this measure have on the boating and allied industries for one example?

Boat owners who can afford to pay full whack come this November may not feel the pinch as much as normal run of the mill folks who may have a boat using red derv as escapism from their 9 to 5 job. It is certainly getting harder to pursue ones means of escapism, boating is one example, I wonder what the gov will come with next to milk us further........I shudder to think!!

60 jeuss last time it was that here was February time, The quotes now are only valid per hour thats how much they seam to fluctuate, They've also been warning of a potential 10 day wait,as demand is now outstripping supply. I have heard that the west is cheaper, Id imagine maybe Scotland is as well... In the SE we get hammered for everything

There is annother way to look at it and thats the global warming effect. They say that the increased tax is to 'Prevent gaz guzzlers from being used as much' therefore preserving our atmosphere. Great more tax to pay. Now if you want to claim the tax back you must run around the country getting proof and then send the claim forms back. (more fuel in postage costs, printing the forms, training the various bods on how to fill the form in... oh and not forgetting the rainforest for the paper)
Then they send you a cheque back which you then have to pay for to get the funds relieased. Am I pointing out the obivious or am i missing something here? All it seems to be is annother exercise in the govenment pushing paper about and giving gordon**** brown annother excuse to put his hit by bus face on our screens. BROWN GET OUT B4 YOU DESTROY ANY MORE OF THE COUNTRY.

If I want to go out on my boat for a dive and a little bit of fishing. It costs £15+ in fuel to tow the boat to the slipway, £12.50 to launch the boat, £40 in fuel for just over 1 hour of cruising. If the sea is rough, water to murky to dive and all you catch is an old boot when fishing, then it works out to be an expensive couple of hours. You end up passing on days and waiting for perfect weather so you can maximise the pleasure from money you have to spend. We get out on the water far less then we used to.

Anyone who has seen how it’s done in the US or AUS know how it should/could be like. I have been considering emigrating to NZ for a while now, just waiting to see how things turn out with the economy and housing etc.

Very true Satsuma, plus as you mentioned, weather can make a huge difference to having a good or bad day.

Affordable: For a while now at St, Abbs, what was free parking now incurs a charge, fishermans car park at St, Abbs incurs a higher parking fee.

Petticowick just outside Eyemouth, considerable steps which was EU funded were installed to make it easier and safer to enter the water at Weasel Loch, then the land owner added a parking fee when steps were installed. very strange do cost when there were no steps?

I watched a couple of boats preparing to head out of the Florida Keys just at the turn of the year, a different air of optimism could be viewed on the divers faces. I'd imagine it is the same for Oz and NZ! Only problem is, US&OZ vessels sometimes have the unfortunate circumstance of leaving folks in the water and heading home

Red Sea day boats akin to whacky races, but with a good livaboard, day and night dives are terrific!! Have you thought about the Red Sea?

I can understand that. I got rid of the power boat and now have a 28' sailing ketch that i use for fishing. its great because once its in the water it doesnt cost me anything (unless the wind dies!) o.k so you cant go in a straight line to get where your going, or some times things break but at least you can get away from the thing called reality and enjoy some beer (no ruels on dic!) with some friends without GB interfearing! nxt year i'm thinking of saling over to the spanish coast and spending some time there..... (chase me there GB!!!!)

Just a small point in defense of Mr Broon and fuel tax for boats - it wisnae him. It's an EU rule.

I believe it's also going to be somehow self regulated, so if you go to the depot and get yourself a few barrels of red/ take it out the farm tank, you'll get away with it. If you get your fuel from a yacht club bowser though, expect the worst!

I bet that is not the full story. Britain seems to bend over backwards to comply or exceed EU guidelines. I just read about a market trader who is continually harassed by the local council for using Imperial weights. EU, rules say it should be Metric according to the council. Not so says the EU when queried!

We also seem to have the highest fuel taxes in the EU, so why not parity there if we have to comply? (That is if we really have to?)

Can't argue with your there mate. It's much the same with Health and Safety too, as discussed in other threads recently. Officials seem to love interpreting fairly relaxed laws/advice as hard as they possibly can. Far too many little Hitlers around.

Re britains fuel tax -it's always been relatively high, so at least we can blame all the politicians! The parity of tax on diesel vs petrol gets me though, as DERV's so much cheaper on the continent. And now that there seems to be a supply problem, the price has gone mental.
