BOC and Volkszone - Gas Offer

my bottle rental for my pureshield size Y on the volkszone offer is £68.40 per year, plus £40.56 a fill brings it to the grand total of £108.96
thats for the rental up front....

Does this deal cover oxygen and acetylene?

I've now got 4 torches, 3 sets of gauges and 2 sets of hoses, but more importantly, I think I've found someone who can show me how to use it safely in person.

I was sent a 40% off offer today, I guess this maybe applied my Hobby Welder deal as its addressed to me and not our workshop, however it applies to the GENIE cylinders and would seem that BOC want people to exchange their Y sized bottles for the new style "FAT" bottle. Tbh mine are enough of a PITA that I'd not swap over.

id looked up the genie bottle its digital but holds about 300 bar not the 220 bar that volkzone offer is on

I hardly use it so this cylinder has lasted years, once either cylinder runs out they will be going back or I might swap to propane as the Oxygen is about £65 a year rental.

Am I right in thinking propane uses a fair bit more oxygen?

Yes it does and you can't weld with it like you can acetylene.

How long will that last you?

A flame pack 50 is exactly what it says an Oxygen and Acetylene set that will give you 50hrs of use. I get the O2 on the Volkzone for £8 and the acetylene separately. Does everything I need perfectly.

Hours of use varies huuuuuuugely depending whether you're welding thin sheet with small tips, brazing with slightly larger tips, flame cutting etc etc

Flamepak 50 is what BOC calls a size Y oxygen partnered with a size J acetylene. The smaller flamepak 20 is a size F or X oxygen & a size M acetylene. There's also a tiny little flamepak 10 (cylinder sizes E & K) which is probably similar size acetylene to what hobbyweld offer

just went into my local BOC for price list.

Y size - prices included vat
pureshield argon £79.04
argoshield light £55.54

yearly rental £115.80

asked about hobby deal, both looked dazzled about it.
then i said i think it was called volkzone deal.

i do not understand how they can charge an extra £21 a year on the same size bottle.
just because it has different gas or gases in it. IE- one is pure and other is a mix.
surely any price differences should be reflected in the gas charge not the rental charge.

im still undecided, i might go elmdale as it works out so much cheaper....

I think he meant the discrepancy in bottle rental from BOC, for argon (£68) and argoshield light (£47) given that it's effectively the same bottle you're renting from the same company.

Maybe, I read the "Elmdale" as being a rent free competitor though. Perhaps the BOC discrepency comes from the quantities they shift, ie Argoshield is used more than Pureshield Argon.

indeed it is a valid point, any price increase in making pure argon should be in the gas price not the bottle rental.

yes they charge a set right to use bottle for 10year. and its a lot less then 10years of BOC rental.

£38+vat for a 20 litre sabre refill of mix, of an unspecified pressure...

Plus, they say no rental, but there is - it's just you have to pay 10 years rental in advance.

all are filled to 200bar

you can call it rental or right to use... doesn't matter. same sort of thing.

BOC - 10 year's rental pure argon - £684.00 ( at yearly intervals)
BOC - 10 year's rental argoshield - £473.40 ( at yearly intervals )

elmdale - 10 year right to use 20L bottle - £201.60

prices speak for themselves.

yes BOC gas refills are cheaper but that will only affect you on how many you use i guess.
