I'm currently restoring a lathe, and I want to clean up the head stock taper. It's basically got rust all around it quite deep in, which is throwing e.g. centers out of alignment.
Now, I could probably bodge it with some abrasives on a stick, but it seems like a morse taper reamer would be a better way to clean up the taper, however I'm not sure how to use one?
I've read on various american forums that the tapers are "self centering", but I'm not sure I trust everything I read on american forums (specifically PM). Youtube also hasn't thrown up any decent videos specifically related to morse taper cleaning.
If someone on here knows, could you just explain the process? Is it simply a matter of sticking the reamer down the headstock and turning it (by hand)? I'm worried about throwing the taper out and making things worse.
