When using a 7018 rod, and welding horizontally, do i start at the bottom and move to the top to prevent the slag from rolling onto the rod, because when i weld top to bottom it seems the slag smothers the rod?. any insights?
Lots of info here> http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=3364
Sparkey, pipelines when manual welded are done vert down (stoving), cellulose rods for root and cap, or WPS dependent for caps?
We'll make a welder of you yet Sparkey!Ah, i see! like the welds flange jockey is doing so well? v-prepped then a first run, then filled up with a 2nd run with a big weave? (heh, blimey is that me talking??)

Sparks, if you get the time, try doing a vertical down with your 6013's. Not easy, you need to leave a gap with a vee prep, just a shade smaller than the rod, or the same. Once you get a start, and you're ahead of the molten flux, GO FOR IT!, straight down. Listen to the arc - you should hear it breaking through the other side.
Then try it with 7018/6's, and 6010's. Very different, much easier.
I love going vertical down. Looks a treat when you get it right. Up is easier though - well - different. Maybe it's not a matter of easy/hard. Just different techniques for different things.
