DIY cnc Plasma

I too have been researching this, trawling the internet is a bit of a minefield - lots of info but it can be a bit confusing.
I am considering making a 1.5m x 3m table, mainly because I have the space and it wont cost a lot more than a half size table.
Does anyone know what sized stepper motors I will require or if these Longs Motor kits are any good or will I be better off going the Arduina / cnc shield route, I know the Gecko stuff is probably the best way to go - but I do not want to dig that deep.

i think the best place for great info on cnc stuff is here
got some members on their that have build many machines and know what's best etc.
a wealth of knowledge

i looked into getting a cheap kit of motors and drivers etc.
but was told to get good motors and good drivers for hassle free CNC'ing
and they will last you a long time.


the Inductance is high on them motors.

I bought the electrics kit from Candcnc in the States as I didn't know enough about that side of things, other parts I bought from Zapp automation, the design I came up with myself after studying many diy builds.
After 2yrs running I must say it's spot on, there is a lot of time involved getting to know all the software and drawing parts, making it was the easy bit really.

That is a nice machine indeed.

Why did you choose the rack and pinion style for the horizontal axis?
Isn't the backlash in the gear a problem?
The gantry moves with 2 motors (one each side), or 1 is enough?
In your opinion, using a belt to move the gantry, is not feasible?

Does your system have an automatic THC?
Is it a pain to setup?
