TIG Training & Qualifications

Hi guys,

Basically I've had a TIG at home for years, time served MIG welder and MMA welder, recently took a job in TIG at a lot less money that I usually earn because the guys said he would train me. Well I'm basically just working my ass off pumping out parts teaching myself because he has got too much work on to show me anything. What I'm worried about is getting into bad habits and not being pointed in the right direction.

I've looked at TWI and it seems that it's a bout £190 a day plus the VAT for training. I think I'd need a good few days spread over a few months so obviously that's going to get very costly.

Are there any other options. I would like to end up getting some coding's in aluminium and perhaps stainless steel pipe. I also need to do my carbon pipe 6G BS 287 in MMA.

Here's some bits I've done at work.

Any help appreciated.

I've come from various temporary MIG and freelance MMA work, onsite and the like, and paid for a lot of qualifications myself already because I was on decent money, now I've gone to £11/pH with the idea someone was going to be looking at my work pointing me in the right direction but I think my boss is too busy and we've got too much work on. I don't he is making enough money out of the business and from me to start sending me off for training. Kind of all hands needed on deck.

I enjoy learning the theory too, I just looked into the TWI Alloys course that sounds right up my street but they haven't got any scheduled. I've got a few books on materials engineering and what not, whatch lots of videos on youtube but you can only learn so much from watching, you need to practice and be pointed in the right direction at the end of the day.

A local firm was advertising near me and I was staggered at the low wages they are offering.

£8.81 per hour.

Working for a prestigous 1st Tier Supplier, Lander Automotive.
Working in a state of the art facility.
Working with Aluminium.
Must be proficient in English Language
Flexible as Lot of overtime available.

There are now a lot of immigrants that can tig to an excellent standard, that should explain it !!!

And they keep saying immigration is NOT driving down wages. ..

Surely less wages for welders mean cheaper welding equipment

Dont take a brain surgeon to work it out mate, My mate has a bulgarian working for him welding and he is as good as anyone i've seen 7.50 an hour !!!

Its only in UK that everything is expensive, I bought my machine in the states and it worked out £1400 cheaper

Your welding on the ally looks very good for some one self taught! With tig if you are shown the basics the rest comes down to personal style. What's good for one might not be for another!

I saw that job in halesowen bit if a joke really. also went for an interview at a place in droitwich were there overtime rate was £1 an hour more than standard rate.
