i have a basic program that should read it, i also have a paid program that deals with fiat and alfa engines but i doubt that will do much as it needs to read the ISO first and it wont be on their system.

if i can get it running i will offer him £120 and take a chance

its still not worth that iff it has problems worth more than market value...from what ive read here then seriously he should be paying you £120 to move it

Same engine as my Zafira, they do go well but suffer lots of little problems.
Inlet manifold flaps seize and brake the links, split vacuum hoses cause all kinds of impossible to find faults, inlet manifold really gums up with carbon due to the egr valve, ahh the egr valve.....
Injectors need coding at least on the Vauxhall, water pumps fail, timing belt tensioners fail. **** if the heads been off recently and it now won't work I'd leave it well alone.
Tell him if you can get it to run quickly you'll take it away for nothing.
Then the gearbox.........!

M32 gearbox is chocolate (thankfully fittedonly to the 120, and 150 late zafs and astras...)

F40 tended to be on the vectra and the saab and its a solid box

More like **** poor design, under engineered and never been upgraded even though they know it's a very common fault that's been around for a long time.

Mine went at 42000 miles and 6 months out of warranty!
£550 for two new timkins taper roller bearings on the main shaft!

Only on the 6 speed manual though.
But that auto box, smoking? Either a leak or the torque converter is fubar!

Seem to remember that Wheeler Dealers had one and there were steering rack bush issues letting it float about and something that required an engine brace or bulkhead reinforcement to deal with some other problem!

We had a Saab at my work for an mot and investigate pull to left. To this day I have no idea how the guy got the car to us as you could turn the steering a little and then you hear a loud bang and the steering locks solid, couldn't manuvure it to get it into the workshop. The section of bulk head were the steering rack u clamps had ripped off and when steering the rack was moving and locking up on the engine,

Would you not set your sights a bit higher BB and get something japanese ? Honda, toyota, nissan or the like ? I see old boys around here with 20 year old toyota corolla's and they never seem to give trouble. French or italian , trouble.

My dad's got a 95 corolla,
He never touched it since he got it in 2003 (other then the odd service and consumable parts) and it's still going without issue, passes every mot with no advisorys.

I've told him not to bother with getting a new car till it dies

just found out its the 16v version of the engine i have in my alfa...would my injectors fit it? the saab has about 30bhp more than the alfa, would that matter?

I thought your alpha was petrol and the saab is a diesel

there is a good reason an 06 plate car is 200 quid, walk away or be prepared to shell out on it, I knew someone with a saab from new he lost 20 grand on the thing and there was nothing wrong with it

My Alfa is a 1.9 jtd 8v.

I am waiting for a call to go and have a look at the Saab, takin some tools and a meter, will try the forced prime and will definitely be checking the injectors with a meter.

Well, I got it going...did t take much. Apparently the diesel tank had been run dry by the garage that did all the work and they filled a few cans into but didn't manually prime the system. After hearin this I primed it and it fired up...and then the real problems started. A horrible knockin from the bottom end, the stink of burning oil followed by a lot of smoke from the engine and it quickly started to overheat when it got to temperature.

I managed to drive it about 500 yards but with the car filling with smoke I decided it was probably best to leave it well alone...although I did offer him £20 for it (scrap value around here is about £35 for a car that size) but he was insistent that it was worth £200...ah well

he said he spent £350 after it siezed up to get it going again...i would be straight back there wanting to know what the hell they did if it developed these problems soon after it being 'fixed'

I didn't think garages opened engines up anymore apart from head gaskets or timing chain/belt changes. If the engine was seized, they would have swapped it out for another one ?

Ah, the old time dodgy back street garage ? Surely he tested the car before handing over the money ?

no idea. i know it was brought home on a transit tow truck with a spectacle lift so i dont know if he didnt want to pay more to have the injectors done too, but he didnt look too impressed when i got it going with little to no effort apart from priming the fuel system
