Evening all..this afternoon I set up the tig side of my machine..spent the morning trying to mig the stack of dimes. But gave up for now as run out of gas.so it was on with the tig...all I am doing at the moment is just running bead after bead and getting a feel for it.had a go not so long back as was told off lol for weaving. .it pointless me trying any sort of joining two pieces together until late I can run a sensible flat bead.will post my results shortly....

As you can see my results didn't turn out as well as I hoped. .

Well they look alright from here but thats not even half the battle. You want to be joining metal with butt joints, fillets, vertical welds, upside down, cylinders....

Running beads really just gets you into the rhythm and sorts out your settings. Then it's the tricky job of actually joining metal when you discover the rhythm is as difficult to find as the right settings.

Not awful, certainly you seem to have the eye for it, I'd be trying some joints if I was you now

It's adding the filler rod I find a bit awkward at the moment. And holding the torch.

Most mig monkeys do it'll come, you have some relatively good beads, need a bit of consistency with the filler but that comes with practice

Stack of dimes is all about increments of movement and timing , it takes practice and a steady hand , get comfortable first , its no good standing over a bench and wobbling around !

When i learned, really struggled with a wp26 torch. Tried a cheap nasty tiddly wink one only rated to 100 amps, much lighter, found it help a lot.

It's a natural part of the process
The "stack of dimes" are created by freeze frames. Every time a dab off filler is added to the pool you reinforce the pool with fill (a bit like a tack) you then move and that tack freezes and you add again. The effect can be elaborated by spacing the dabs further apart or using a very slow pulse with high and low current. This isn't always the best thing to do as this causes mixed penetration depth

It's much easier to achieve the "dimes" with aluminium tig. They always appear more prominent in Alu.
