mag drill cutters for pillar drill

Hi i have just got a sip f25 - 16 floor standing pillar drill, im using it to drill a lot of holes in 3/4mm box steel just like the photo ive added.

I was going to buy a mag adapter to go in my pillar drill but before i take this route do any of you guys now of a better way do this. ive looked on you tube and these broach cutters seem to be a lot better than the hole saws.

I've use Mag drill cutters in a pillar drill and the are good but you definetley need to clamp the work otherwise the cutter will throw it about. Also the cutters are no good for stacked cuts, you need to clear the blank before the next cut, if you stack a number of plates together and then try going through the lot the blank from the first cut will stick under the teeth and stop the cutter cutting into the second plate.
They last a lot longer than holesaws in my experience and give a cleaner hole.

it also looks like the mag cutters cut twice as fast thats the main reason i wanted them also with hole saws the cut out section end up sticking inside the cutter so you have to pri it out, these mag cutters seem to spit it out once cutter i think they have some sort of spring in them to make it do this???

You need to ensure that you have the correct ejection pin for your rotabroach cutter: there are long and short series.
Also, sometimes the the slug is not ejected because a burr catches on the inside of the cutter, and it is essential that the slug is ejected before you begin cutting another hole. You will need some form of coolant when cutting, and I use a neat(undiluted) standard coolant delivered by a few squirts from Wesco oil can.

There are MT2 to Rotabroach adaptors out there from all the usual places including that evil one.

Depending on the hole size, you could just need to sharpen an ordinary drill to make it a butterfly drill.

Looking at your pic in the opening post I didn't think the holes were that big.
That must be 75mm box or more.


Anyway, my pic shows what I use for up to 20mm holes, a butterfly drill.
The example is a 11mm which I use for making templates in conjunction with a bob punch.

Also in the pic is a trepanning tool mounted in my MT3 drill which will cut much bigger holes.

The advantage of a trepanning tool is that it's adjustable, so although they are expensive you only need one.
Fixed size hole cutters can cost more by the time you have bought several sizes.

iff you do use broaching cutters then try get the biggest centre pin you can fit in...it puts more tension on the quil centre spring and ejects the slug a lot stronger...i Have an R8 one for my mill/drill and use it all the time for precise holes.

How do these mag cutters work is they some sort of spring inside of them???? i was just going to mark my steel hole punch it then cut was not going to pre drill as im going to keep the slugs for cap ends

all you need it a centre punch dot and let the broach pin sit in that...serves 2 purposes,stops the cutter wandering and lets you know the centre of your hole

i think buying these mag bits are going to be alot better than trail and error with other bits plus alot less stress on the drill i think i will just buy the adaptor and buy the sizes needed need the best because there is alot of holes im drill in one sitting.
