110v on a 240v supply

Found a 110v hammer drill in my dads garage and even he isn't sure whos it is. Tells me its never worked and I think I know why?!
Someone has put a 3 pin 240v 13amp plug on it.

Would this have done any damage to the drill ie plugging a 110v drill into 240v?
Its a good drill so im going to buy a transformer if I thought the drill would work.

It may have blown the fuse before damaging the drill. Get a multimeter and see if there is continuity between live or neutral and earth - if so it's duff.

Then check for resistance between live & neutral with the trigger pulled, if it's open circuit or dead short I would say it's duff.

The above may not work if it has an electronic speed control though, in that case you'll have to open it up and check the motor windings with your meter.

Do you know anyone with a 110v transformer you could try it on?

There is a 110v transformer for sale locally cheap enough so il just buy it and hope for the best.
If the drill doesn't work I can just sell on the transformer, no harm done.

Its a decent 800w Hitachi hammer drill so it would very useful if it does work.

From experiece. it worked ran very fast. then burnt out. Youll be lucky if theres no damage. Try it some where any where before you buy the tranny. Stan

You could test it by getting another 110v tool and wiring them in series...



(Don't do that, it's silly)

that would work with any other 240 appliance even a light bulb

Give it a sniff, if it smells burnt don't bother!

Quick blast on a 240v to 110v shaver adaptor or socket.....don't run it normally just a quick turnover to see if its working.

Never noticed it smelling burnt.
Don't have an adaptor to try.
Think it only ever blew the fuse of blew the trip anytime it was tried.

Hopefully that has protected the actual motor. Il see tonight

shy bairs get nowt, whoever is selling the transformer, ask if you can try a drill in to make sure the TRF works, Just a wee test to satisfy your peace of mind, then leg it or buy it.

its in the garage.

i got mine so i could use a 110v sheet nibbler i bought of my mate.

then picked up a hilti drill thats 110v.

sold the nibbler to my neighbours brother inlaw's son.
as i had got my first plasma..... so didn't think il need it anymore.

then picked up a 110v bella mixer for £50.... bargain!

then got four routers off here from Badger1bear, and three of them are 110v....
(BTW im now referred to as the John smiths delivery boy) LOL

so they are handy to have.........

i keept buying 110V transformers from the car boot determint to get a good one 3rd time lucky only paid 10er a go for them
ended up with a realy old one in an aly box
and its straight 110V not a 55v split rail like moden ones bit sketchy but works fine just a bit more of a shock if you touch a live cable

ive got electric metal shears and would never part with them they are much quicker then dragging the plasma out and leave a neat edge
