Mobile fume extraction

My workshop unit is in the middle of a massive subdivided warehouse, so I don't have access to any external walls, and I'm sure the landlord wouldn't be happy about me putting holes in the roof That rules out any extraction, so I'm left looking at filters.

I was wondering what peoples experience was of the fume filter carts, like the offerings from Nederman and Plymovent. These sort of things...

Any good?

WOW ! £1500 piped out to £ 2400 for a carbon filter one that's free standing .

Why not make your own fan box on wheels or big castors using a Machine Mart sort of mountable 500 mm dia fan . I guess it will work out much cheaper and not break down after the warrantee has run out by one day .

Suck in on one side via a semi rigid 200 mm dia flexible tube & push it out the other side of the box through rigid tubing .. if it's a plastic pipe earth it every now & then along its length to reduce static charges . you can buy aluminium vent tubing in 900 mm sections which can stretch out to about 3 mtrs .. joining them cheaply is a doddle ..cut up some old brown soil pipe and take out a 6 mm wide strip so it can close up enough to slip inside the aluminium piping
making a bench or floor stand clamp that can support the tube above the work shouldn't be too difficult for a guy who plays on this site .

Just curious as to how well they work, if the filters are that effective.

A company we work for uses I think a Lincoln one, it works a treat and the lad who does the fab loves it, he even has a light attached to it! Wouldn't like to say how long the filters last but at least the main bulk of fumes are taken away from you, he he a lot of money though. Then again can you put a price on a lung?!

Something rings the alarms for me , such an expensive and useful bit of gear as a self contained air cleaner going for not a lot on eBay .. I smell a rat.

See if there are any on Amazon or other sales sites or machinery sites second hand and have a check to see if anyone has critiqued / assessed them .
There might also be ( wash my mouth out with carbolic soap ) other welding sites to check out as well.

Yep, I've seen a few of the Nedermans go for £300. They've all been quite far away though, otherwise I'd have been tempted.

I managed to grab a Nederman filtercart on eBay for just £200, which I think is a bargain. I'm just waiting for a replacement filter to arrive from Sweden now, but from just trying the unit with the old filter, I'm impressed.

Westermans quoted me £1200+VAT for the same filtercart, refurbished, so even after buying a new filter for it, I'm quids in
