Milwaukee M18 4ah battery (which will be enough for light/hobby use without stopping) is £49, or almost half that for a no-brand copy - I have no idea whether they're any good or not. I'm thinking about the 1/2 impact here mind with the M18, you might be fine with a 3/8 one which'll be an M12, and presumably less money?

I think the battery's come with at least a 1 year warranty, it may be two.

I bought my 1/2" impact as a twin deal and got the changeable impact which comes with 1/4, 3/8 & 1/2 drives, both are 18v so use the same batterys, I did try the copy batteries from the states and they are equally as good as OEM and were £36 each

The only problem I had with the cheap gun I bought was the batteries kept failing. I got fed up and bought a cheater bar and I'm back to doing it by hand. My next purchase will be a half decent cordless impact gun as you don't realise how much you use them until you don't have the use of it!

I bought a Ryobi BIW180M One Plus 18V Impact Wrench, plus 2 batteries and charger in last year's Amazon black Friday deals. Amazon still sell them and I've used it extensively on the strip-down of my classic car resto project. I reckon it's probably one of the most useful tools I've ever bought and it's not failed to remove anything I've tried. If you can get a breaker bar in first always go for that, but these cordless wrenches are great for removing nuts and bolts quickly, giving your hands and arms a rest. Always best to have a spare battery as you can pretty much guarantee the battery will die just when you need it most.

Another vote for Milwaukee, although its well over the price your looking at, I don't often buy expensive gear but it has been one of the best tools I have ever bought. M18 impact, takes off front hub nuts fine, worst I used it on was m12 bolts with nuts tack welded, threads were stripped but it took them off, very impressed, its got way more power than my air impact.

With the replys I'm getting I'm really considering saving up for a Milwaukee because I can see myself regretting buying a £100 gun.
Do you guys that have them buy from a UK shop? Id like to be able to bring back to a shop if it breaks with no hassles.

local place that discounts, pays to look around, there are a few different models of the m18, heavy duty and high torque, make sure you get the one that's best for what you want.

I got a bare m18 grinder and it failed within the first week, exchange was 2 days and sent me the newer model, make sure you register them for warranty as it extends it.

I've been looking around recently too, the Milwaukee thread on Garage Journal gives me tingles in my dingle, but the two things that I was thinks were firstly would you not need the Vaseline handy for paying the import taxes and the like, and would you need to source either a 110v adapter or a separate British charger?

Looks like they do 120v and 230v chargers rather than the "Global" ones so yes a European spec would be needed.

Here is 3 of mine. The clarke electric one is the cheapest option and is quite powerful but is quite bulky. I mainly use mine for driving in big coach screws and that kind of thing. It is about £60 from machine mart I think. The air one is good but you need a good compressor so it is limited to home/ workshop use but it is the smallest and handy for awkward bolts etc. The milwaukee one is the best all rounder in my opinion. It is the One I use all the time. Plenty of power and It makes short work of spinning nuts and bolts off. It is the most expensive option mine was £150 as a bare tool and case. But it uses the same batteries as my sds drill. And the batteries last a while.One of my mates has a draper cordless which he rates but it's not in the same league as the milwaukee. Hope this helps you a bit mate.

Looks like I've my heart set on a milwaukee, good find Mrfuzzy that and a 5.0AH battery and charger with come to £275 which doesn't seem to bad at all.

You won't be disappointed with the Milwaukee. Got the 18v M18 with 4 ah batteries. Got the M18 drill driver aswell and both have been faultless over the last year or so.

New or second hand?

New ones have to be registered on the Milwaukee site after purchase regardless of where it's bought from, as I understand it if you have a problem after a certain period (28 days?) you take it up with Milwaukee, not the retailer.

Can't give Milwaukee enough credit on their warranty. Got the 18V drill and 1/2" compact impact gun. Drill gave out inside the warranty period and replaced straight away. The 1/2" gun popped outside the warranty period as I'd never registered it online for the extra year. When I carried it in I didn't hold much hope with it being out of warranty but told the shop owner that if the gun would be replaced I'd pay the extra and get the 3/4" gun instead. That seemed to work for him and the gun had to be returned to their main distributer in Ireland to look over. Took a few weeks but they allowed the claim on the warranty against the 3/4" gun.
I know someone saying that two items from the same manufacturer popped while relatively young would make you wonder about buying from them but the gear is phenomenal. Being honest, the 1/2" gun was probably too small for agri work but the power out of it would put any air gun to shame.

Don't know if any Milwaukee dealer will sort it. I brought it back to where I got them so not sure about getting one on ebay. Probably best to contact Milwaukee or a local supplier

I find all the 18v guns to be too big for anything other than wheel bolts, hub nuts and crank bolts. You can't get them in anywhere!
Air guns are a but better but even they're quite restricted.
I've got a 1/4" Ingersoll Rand air gun with a 1/2" anvil (IR2125QTI) and I find it to be spot on. It will struggle with hub nuts and crank bolts but everything else is a breeze, and its small enough to get into really tight spaces. Don't know what I'd do without it now!

The only other option is to get a 10.8/12v impact but the downsode to these is the bulky battery which could get in the way. The Milwaukee M12 fuel impact gun looks to be the one to go for, but I still think it's too bulky....
