Cycle Superhighway; even the cyclists don't want it.....

In between Leeds and Bradford they are building a cycle superhighway, at vast expense and (currently) the roadworks are causing delays and a lot of inconvenience.

There are some completed sections, last week I was travelling the same way every morning and what did I see? At least 3 cyclists each day using the now much narrower road and completely ignoring the brand new very expensive, and probably much safer cycle way.

I can not put into words my lack of understanding as to why they would choose to ride on the road where it's completed? The road is now at least 4 foot narrower!

It's not just a cycle lane, it's seperate from the road, with a kerb seperating it, even has crossings and stuff

Yet the completed bits are still unused!

Some cyclists are pricks, indeed some motorists are pricks. Sounds like you fall into this category if this is how you drive past cyclists my old pal.

yes but when u have to follow them for a quarter of a mile with a traffic build up and they wont budge they ask for it .single file would be in order. common sence

When Im riding along the cycle path, those dog walkers annoy me walking side by side and nobody can overtake them. I just ping my bell and cut in on them

lol im not walking. im on my bike hese a whippet and i take him for long runs i aint walking.even better if he sees rabbits or other dogs he runs like hell and pulls me along

The Highway Code says you can ride two abreast unless it hinders other roadusers, but the all too common attitude of 'you are slow get out of the way' does not help.

I use cycle paths where it is feasible, but frankly, I do not want to have to stop every five minutes to cross a road that I would have right of way over if I was two yards to the right. ?Would you?

I treat all users the same whatever I am using, but I also get out of bed early enough not to need to pressure everyone around me by my need for speed. I am Skoda-ing at the minute, but still see more driving idiots than cycling ones.

Our governments do not think through this kind of half-arsed strategy. If it was done properly, Denmark for instance, this topic would not be revived every month or so.

There are many donkeys on the roads - some of them are walking, some cycling and some driving some kind of self-propelled motor vehicle...

If the cycle superhighway is anything like the cycletracks our council wasted money on they're so badly laid you're better off cycling across a ploughed field, and that's assuming you could avoid punctures from the broken glass and slalom around all the dog turds.

Tuesday before last I was at a workmate's funeral. He was doing this and came off his bike, banged his head. Went to bed with a headache and never woke up.

I was working in London on Blackfriars Road, it's having a "super highway/ Boris Johnson dick waving project " being built. It's going to be half the width of the whole road by the look of it, the bus lane looks to be no more and they will have to share what's left of the road with the other traffic. The most stupid thing I spotted on the drawings is that they've put the bus stops diagonally opposite each other so when you have a bus stopped each side of the road no cars with be able to get through!
Utter madness!
I will cause gridlock and then cost the tax payer more money again to have the mess sorted out.
I bet the cycling lot still manage to get themselves smashed flat though as they will still cut across the traffic to get where they're going. It does seem in London at least they never learn.

You clearly have never ridden in London then, some of the cyclist's down here have a death wish, and the cyclist super highway will put up the congestion/pollution figures.

I think the trouble is everyone is a bit right!
If cycle lanes in huddersfield are like elsewhere theyre full of debris, raised drain covers, twigs/branches etc which makes it difficult to use them.
I completely agree some cyclists don't do themselves any favours and flout the rules but you probably wouldn't cut up two horse riders if they were two abreast, even if they're not supposed to. And what do you do if you see another motorist doing what they shouldn't? Chase them down and run them off the road too!?
I certainly see more motorists disobeying the highway code than cyclists, in my area anyway. I don't do much city driving but I can appreciate some cyclists act like they're in a bloody video game or something with no regard for anyone else using the roads, or pavements for that matter! But even so, I think if your driving a car you should realise you can do a lot more damage than someone on a bike and take the moral highground if that's the right way to put it.

Another pet hate of mine is they cycle along a pedestrian path and when they come to a zebra crossing they swing out to the left to get a straight run across the road, mostly without stopping because they believe vehicles should stop for someone at a zebra crossing.

There were four crashes that I saw myself last year on that very spot. There's a large building site on the embankment it's the 3rd building down from Big Ben and they actually banned vehicles from turning right into it. Why? Because of the number of cyclists riding full pelt into the side of turning vehicles. Everywhere else in London they stipulate that you should always turn right into site to stop cyclists getting trapped in the blind spot on the left and in this one location you have to turn left across the cycle lane because the loony cyclists were doing 30mph into the side of vehicles. One mini-bus collected two of them at one time.

My big issue isn't that they ride 2 or 3 abreast on narrow country roads, it's that the councils are spending millions on this super highway, and the cyclists are riding on the much narrower road, so something is provided to keep them safer, and they choose not to use it.

They should have spent the money on something that would be appreciated, like children's services or hospitals
