Saw this on the 'Bay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321808948141?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT and wondered if a couple of layers spread on the shed floor would help catch any hot stuff, when/if I have to weld inside [wooden shed ]. Another possibility would be old fibreglass curtains?

Had considered a welding blanket but they seem expensive for all that I'd need to use it.

Or am I bonkers.......?

I was hoping some of that fibreglass sheeting [doubled up] could be 'moulded' round on the floor below the vice to catch wayward hot stuff falling onto the Costco foam tiles - you can see the small holes if you look closely, left after a "I can't wait to try" session with the R-Tech 180........

i got hold of some fire blankets at car boot sale work a treat for covering things.

Although the advert says fire resistant you will find that spatter still burns holes in it. Or rather melts the glass into burn sized holes. You can get aluminised glass cloth which is probably more akin to the fire blankets ****** refers to. If the seller's description is correct and the thickness is 0.03 mm (1.2 thou in old money) that will not give much protection at all.

Don't forget to get one of those fire extinguishers in lidl next time they have them slim-boy. Worth their weight in gold if something does catch light.

just put down some ply or stirling board. I think the FG will be easily caught and will be a trip hazzard

I don't mind if they burn through eventually, just want to a) avoid burning down the shed and that sails in her, and b) stop ruining the flooring.

Space is a ta premium [due to 'stuff' ] so any form of solid sheet [steel etc] would be difficult to accommodate - besides, would hot metal droplets roll off it when falling from a height?]

Looks like a search on the 'Bay is in order...........

Going to go with a mix of snooper's suggestion of a bit of sheet steel [small enough to store] and a few layers of that linked fg sheet. If it stops the spatter from reaching the floor, the steel underneath ought to do the job. Cheap enough to replace and it'll only be used if I'm forced to weld inside.

If it's useless, I'll get the thinking cap back on....if I can find it.

I can't look at that revoltingly clean workshop, its just not right. Not even a dirty tea mug, or bin full of rusty scrap.

When fibreglass catches fire it take no prisoners welding sparks can reach the far corners of most work shops any rubbish and they will smoulder away.
I also use a cheap gazebo and windshields and plan my welding day.
also watch out some of the old fire blankets contain asbestos

Tell you what is a fire risk, when you let metal grinding dust and swarf build up, that burns if a spark falls on it, and is very hard to put out if you can't get to it, behind machines ect.

i would be tempted to line the floor with chequer plate
a folded upstand around the edges and a tube of hi temp silicone to stick and tidy up the joints and corners
