Loss of sensation in my thumb

Bit of an update on this, I got back toy room and had a shower, while my hand was hotnfr the shower I had full feeling again, about an hour later it's back to being numb.

I am not working on tools tomorrow (I'm welding ) and only for 2 hours but after speaking the h and s guy here he has found me an electric sander with a lock on switch and a lower vibration rating so Monday should be easier.

I'm in work all weekend but sat in an office so if I can get a docs appointment I can Pop out for an hour to see the doc.

Starting to think it's not white finger as parm has pointed out its not an instant thing. I think it could be tool related as I haven't done much with any power tool for quite a while and now I'm sanding all day so maybe just down to that

I'm hoping I wake up tomorrow and it's gone but probably not although one guy I'm working with reckons every now and then if he sleeps awkward his hand is tingly for hours when he wakes up so maybe that too as I'm not fond of this mattress either, it's like plaster board

i started to get this a few years ago with sanders, changing to more modern equipment has alleviates teh problem, i still get twinges if I use vibrating machinery for long periods, but at least i dont get the numbness

well, i didnt go to docs as i havent stopped since i got back, but woke up this morning and most of the feeling is back in my thumb, and as the day has gone on the feeling has returned a bit more again so im quite hopeful that ts nothing major.

i am back at the job tomorrow so if it goes numb again i know its becasue of the tools and will change from an orbital sander something else

You can get short-term effect from vibration and long-term/permanent damage. The faster the short-term effect comes on the more long-term damage you're doing.

if it comes back you really need to stop doing whatever aggravates it altogether.... 'kin hard to see how I know, but once it starts it will not go away. that it has taken so long to go suggests that there is a possibility of real damage if you carry on.

If you were an employee of mine I would be telling you to go book an appointment and not come back until you had...

Get something with a trigger lock button and change hands now and then. I have white finger from years of fettling and it comes on when my hands get cold.

Yep same here...i have it too and cold definitely makes it worse... high doses of vitamin D helped me a bit but it didn't cure it. Do you use any medication brokenbiker?

No sir its not the orbital sander,otherwise I would have had it years ago using orbital sanders on a daily basis,sadly some people think it won't happen to me type senario but there ya go ya can't tell them.

the trouble is when your young and old duffers tell u to stop doing something and take care of yourselfyou just laugh it off. i wear ear defenders and dust masks at work .im partialy deaf after 40 years of noise but shouldnt get any worse i hope i make youngsters wear masks and defenders when chisseling and drilling walls out for me

I have just last week sat through a talk on white finger, get it checked out. It only gets worse, cold weather aggravates it too. The gloves reduce the vibration felt, they don't stop it. Only one way to stop it and that is to stop using the tool. Each power tool should have a rating, this will be something like 2.5m squared. you can enter this into a calculator on the H@S website that will tell you how long you can use the tool for before doing damage.

Well, it's gone. Not really sure when the feeling came back but it is fully back and using the sander since hasn't affected it at all so not sure what happened.

Quite annoying as I have a docs appointment tomorrow to talk about it and it's not there anymore

Well, doctor was rather unsympathetic. Told me that as it had gone away it was probably just a pinched nerve and to go back if the feeling goes again

In all fairness the last time I went to the docs I ended up calling an ambulance from the waiting room as the docs felt my dizziness and blurred vision were down to tiredness...turned out to be a damaged eardrum that was infected. They weren't too impressed when paramedics carried me out of the waiting room and told the doctor to go back to his desk

Not to dismiss your situation it's probably not related to any exposure to vibration. Vibration damages the capillaries in the finger tips and this is made worse by cold weather as the body tends to reduce blood supply to the extremities to ensure core organs work properly. I suggest that you see a quack if you haven't already
