Shed buying advice?

Right, it seems we're not the only ones in this boat at the moment. The landlord wants his house back, probably due to it needing a lot of work to comply with future regulations, etc, etc.

Luckily we've found somewhere else to rent, its closer to the farm but further from work so swings and roundabouts really.. The main concern, other than where all the house stuff is going to fit in, is where the heck am I going to put the contents of my workshop?

First and currently only thought, is to split the contents across the long single garage and a large shed.

I don't have the time available to build a shed, and there are no commercial/industrial units near by that could be rented - so a shed seems the only option.

Is there anything to look out for?

I'm looking at a 16' x 10' on eBay with an external covered store of 6' x 10' for logs and coal. No OSB or Chipboard in sight according to the manufacturer, which is good.

Any tips for putting it up? Only grass to put it on which isn't ideal, unless I talk to the new landlord about putting some gravel down, or something else?

Flagstones would be better than gravel Steve but as long as it's not sitting on damp or wet it should be okay.

I've used euro pallets before and they work well.

That being said, you sure anything other than nine inches of concrete is gonna take the weight of your stuff? :P

As has been said,erect it on flagstones or bricks at even intervals ie corners and central....the floor in my shed is destroyed because the plonkers who erected it put it in the corner of the garden that rainwater gathers,if they would have put it oon bricks then it would not have suffered wetrot.

Was there when I moved in though and the back is completely flagged over.

as said put it on flags if you can, even if you have to put a thickish membrane sheet under them to put a sand mix on and lay flags on top, as long as base is level shed sides and roof will go up easy and quick

What about a half sized shipping container ? Not as wide (20' x 8') but can be placed on something like railway sleepers as bearers. You could then clad the outside with ply, cut grooves with circular saw set very shallow to create impression of tongue and groove then stained. The roof could have a simple apex fabricated that could also act as a loft type store.

Have plenty of flagstones... I'll be taking at least 22 with me! Had a quick look around at base systems currently available on the market and have come up with at least one supplier that impress me.

Gravel was an initial idea, with the ECO bases available on eBay, but realising after I'd posted about this that they would end up holding water - something I need to avoid. Unfortunately after posting, I proceeded to take two trailers of equipment out of the current workshop, to be stored in a barn - I've since filled the trailer again, hence the delay in my reply.

I knocked a 19x11 foot garage/shed/workshop/junk store (edit depending on week) with my old man in 3 days...and neither of us are chippies
4x2 studwork can be knocked up rapidly...light to move as well

3 longish days but it was done...

Also saved me a packet..

I really haven't got time to be knocking a shed up myself as well. I'm currently putting together an outside dog kennel and run from scratch, with food and bedding storage. So its all self contained ideally as there isn't space for our two dogs in the house, and they're in outside runs when staying at the farm.

I'd prefer to build the workshop myself, as you say - it will save a packet. It would also be well over engineered and probably outlast the earth.

Unfortunately, there isn't access to put a container over the bungalow we're 99% confirmed on. Telephone cabling runs across the driveway entrance and the entrance itself is from a narrow road which I can just pull my truck and trailer around in to. I'd love one personally, if I could fit a 40' container in, it would be the first and only option - security is the main reason, but also the fact I could strap everything down and have it lifted out to move somewhere new.

I daren't think about it at the moment to be totally honest! 6 years worth of purchasing, fabricating and general hoarding to be frank, and I'm having to get a bit ruthless - although, if I can find some pallet racking going cheap, there is the option of setting a proper "stores" up on the farm. I've got stuff left over from being a sparky 10 years ago, a ton of plumbing kit that was being skipped on a site I laboured on, bloody tons of stuff that IS useful..

On a side note, excuse the rambling, but, is your poly tunnel on a raised wooden bed? I can't for the life of me remember, and with having a giant greenhouse to move and site, I'm looking at a railway sleeper type construction..

Oh..we have a chicken hut too - so I shall be calling on your expertise in the chicken and egg rearing department too!

I daren't think about it at the moment to be totally honest! 6 years worth of purchasing, fabricating and general hoarding to be frank, and I'm having to get a bit ruthless - although, if I can find some pallet racking going cheap, there is the option of setting a proper "stores" up on the farm. I've got stuff left over from being a sparky 10 years ago, a ton of plumbing kit that was being skipped on a site I laboured on, bloody tons of stuff that IS useful..

Polytunnel is mounted directly into earth. Tubes have a foot by foot plate bolted eighteen inches underground. Earth is rammed by hand on top to hold it. The base where the sheet is attached is on wooden rails. You affix the plastic when it's, say, 8" above the deck. Pushing it down then puts the tension in. You want it as tight as a drum, literally.
