i need to find out what a5 stands for on a topside fillet weld with a 300mm leg length??

don't know much about the notation used on drawings for welding. it could be 5mm..... the size of the weld required. i'm sure someone with more knowledge will be along soon.

a5 is a fillet with a 5mm throat thickness

a fillet with a 300mm leg length??. Thats no way a 5mm throat and it would probably be the biggest fillet weld ever made.

If you consider a fillet to have a cross section shape of a right angle triangle the leg length is the vertical or horizontal dimension. The throat thickness the dimension is the distance from the hypotonuse to the angle.

My thoughts too Al, hell of a big at 300mm long! Correct me if I'm wrong, but 5 at top of symbol = leg length, throat t= .707x metal t.

throat t= .707x metal t.

Sounds about right. sin 45 is .707 or thereabouts and you'd expect a 45 degree angle.

Dont get me excited

Ive only ever seen one weld that comes anywhere near. That was the Turret to Hull weld on a Trident Submarine. Absolutely massive and welded with a machine and flux cored. It took days to complete.

Obvious now I was in BS/ISO thinking, where "a" is EN standard as described here> http://www.twi.co.uk/j32k/protected/band_3/jk66.html

Formula I use to calculate fillet welds to establish desired throat thickness is:

0.707xleg length = throat thickness.

For example: 6mm= leg x .707= 4.25 throat thickness

4.25 throat t divided by .707= 6mm leg.

Beats me why they persist in changing all this stuff when you end up with the same result
