Hi, I think it was for safety reasons, if the door got slammed and broke the glass the wire stopped shards from falling down on unsuspecting residents. Plus I think it was a bit of a fad from the 50s.

Yeah it is for borrowed light reasons, a relative was actually one of the builders of my house and told me that was the reason.
There is no landing window and two of the rooms (opposite to each other) have them, they are plain glass and one is the bathroom but considering it is above the door no one is going to manage perving without difficulty or a stepladder which I suspect would give the game away a tad.
