If I were in the market for a lathe..............

Apologies if in wrong section .....Does anyone know about these suppliers if I were in the market for a second hand machine - local ish to me which is handy but any other suppliers that are recommended...........played with a c Chipmaster in my youth... and have a Unimat anni 2000 hobby lathe but watching Doubleboost has whet my appetite.....oh dear!

first big problem have you got any tooling????
Homeandworkshop are canny but like so many retailers tend to be top price for stuff.-- Theres G&M vaguely down your way. keep an eye on Homeworkshop.org.uk as well.
if you have the space you wont regret the likes of an 11", L5, L5A, 140 etc. you want the latest spec lathe in good condition with a cupboard full of extras for the least amout of money.

theres no such thing as a beginners lathe just get something medium sized if the price and room is right otherwise if small u cant realy go wrong with a decent myford

Thanks Stan...no will be starting from scratch and appreciate there still be extra costs on top of the machine, tooling, chucks, gauges etc..
Assume that need to be aware of noisy machines, worn, pitted or otherwise damage beds.

Yes know Footscray..was christened there and had my first job just along from their present location....we were at 122 Maidstone Rd.

My advice is buy the biggest one you can fit in the space you have, obviously in GWO, known maker. Little wear as possible, and is a bonus if it has plenty of tooling as this were a lot of money can be spent.

I started with an ml7, and found very quickly it didn't have enough swing for the type of work I do. The small machines are really only good for model making etc.

An L5 is a good choice (I'm biased) and can had for peanuts if you look hard enough.
Colchesters, or if after a smaller unit a boxford of a smaller size, AUD u had in my list at one time.
Car boots are great for tooling to get started you'll be surprised what you find.

Asked some pertinent questions. Just need to find some space and then I think we can do business.
More Super 7's than i have seen in my life.....very tempting but advsied i need something bigger

Something bigger than a Myford? What are you going to do with it?

I have a super 7 and restore motorbikes and it does everything I need.

I often feel there is tendency to assure people bigger is better without actually analysing what you actually want to do.

Same with a mill, I have a Dore Westbury which was made on a Myford!

.... innuendo ignored ...... Even my Colchester Master 2500 is limiting at times. The bigger the main spindle bore the less faffing around you have to do mounting awkward things like hubs on fat shafts
