Mains Power File.

I have an original Black and Decker Powerfile that's on its last legs as the bearings are shot, looking round for a replacement and I came across this:

Now I know its Silverline!!!
But has anyone bought this type as it appeals to me as it hasn't got the bulky motor housing sticking out the side like the B&D one has.

It's not Silverline it's Silverstorm and although I haven't used one I still have my B&D version I would definitely try one of those if it packed up. A long time ago there was an attachment to convert an angle grinder into a power file but they seem to be history now but they looked a lot like that.

Unfortunately Silverstorm is a name used by Silverline.

i bought a powerfile from either aldi or lidl about a year ago 3 interchangeable heads with a 3 yr warrant sill going strong now, think it was £29.99 looks sturdier than that one and i think the aldi/lidl one is 350 watt as well

Does it have the motor sticking out the side though.

have the same silverline one, not expensive.. paid peanuts for it, but you definitely get the same value, the belt jumps off all the time the moment you put any load on it, and the motor get scorching hot after 5 minutes....

Worth it?, depends on what you need, light / quick job use with no really heavy load, why not... prolonged use, or heavy works, give it a wide berth....

I have the same one....does the job but nothing to compare out against but it was only about £25/30

Thanks for that, nice to get an opinion from the horses mouth. Reading up on it the belt speed is a 1/3 of the B&D one so I think I will give it a miss.

I have the aldi one, which I bought thinking I'd find out whether it was useful or not then if it was, buy a decent one when it packed up. It is really useful, I reach for it all the time and so far it hasn't packed up after at least a year.

I have a B&D 13mm power file and the Silverline one above which I gave a good workout today on some alloy for about 3 hours in total, performed really well for a cheap tool. The Silverline belt speed is much slower than the B&D so material removal is slower but you can get the Silverline in places due to it's size. The pivoting head is handy for access and the first thing I noticed was modifying part of the body that restricts the head pivoting might give 90° which would be a bonus but the warranty would be void.

I've had no problems with belts staying on and they last much longer due to the slower speed compared with the B&D. The motor does get hot but you need to hold the handle and not the motor body (which is all too easy due to the size) or the cooling air flow is easily restricted. Once the motor starts warming up the speed slows slightly when flat out.

I did some hunting about when I bought mine 12 months ago and found an offer that included two packs of belts for not a lot more than the basic tool here, not sure how the price compares today. I was surprised how well made it is for the money and quite pleased overall but worth remembering it is only a low powered tool for light material removal, works great shaping GRP with a 60 grit belt.

Photos are of the alloy sanded today, a replacement 20" 3 piece wheel centre that had only been rough CNC machined by the supplier, skimmed over all 32 spoke faces using a 120 grit belt.

Reciprocating saw and glue an old broken file to one of the blades.....saw must have variable speed though as it don't half go like the clappers.

There's also the Proxxon one - much smaller than the B&Q, less powerful but really good for detail areas.

I meant this style of power file, where it's not really a file at all.
