Hi everybody, here are a couple of shots of the first few practice welds with my new Clarke 160te, on 20g (thinish) mild steel. .6 wire argolight pwr 1 min wire feed 4.5 or so... the welds at the top are before tea break, bottom ones are a mix of too fast too slow, oops forgot to turn the gas on! etc....

Top welds look very good! Like you say, the bottom ones are a little hit-and-miss but still very good for early attempts, you're doing far better than a lot of others have.
Keep it up!

Looks good! Eventually you will learn to make the welds more straight and uniform but great start. Also looks like either your running a bit hot or you need to use thicker plate. Are you pushing or pulling? I prefer to push. All in all keep up the good work!

thanks for the feedback, It's only 20 gauge steel, so probably about as thin as U can get away with on the 160T. I could turn the wire feed down a little, as it's already on the lowest power settings...Min 1. But any suggestions welcome.
As soon a s i get a chance I'll post up a pic on some thicker metal.

As for welding in a staight line, well, I'll try following a marker pen line and see. I had only just got it set up and running

i think arkangel this is what you want to know, the pics are both sides of same panel, to show penertration of welds, the top ones were done parallel to me on the bench, start right and work leftwards.
the dirty scruffy ones were at same position but metal turned to get clear patch, BUT I forgot to turn the gas up/ had the wire feed too fast/too slow etc to see what effect change they made a?

did you start off with the mistakes or with the good welds and start exparamenting with the settings

Starting with Clarke 160te, on 20g (thinish) mild steel. .6 wire argolight pwr 1 min wire feed 4.5 or so.. I have a mini reg on the Argosheildlight it only has gauge for bottle contents, NOT gas flow so i set it that I could just feel gas flow - power off! You dont get poked by the wire feeding out then!

Did the first/top few on this setting, the rest well just turn up/down the feed speed/gas, on less/more, power up it just blows holes!

i learned alot by palying with the settings my first few times welding
