First stove attempt.

Finally got round to making a small stove thanks to finding a supply of redundant bottles:

I think I am going to have to go smokeless due to the location of my workshop, if I am right that means I will need a fire base approx a third the way up the bottle with some controllable air feed below it... as you will now realise I am a bit green concerning combustion and stoves.

I have some 12mm round bar, would that do or would it not be heavy enough and simply disintregate.

Secondly if anyone local wants a bottle FOC let me know and I will get one for you, they have all had their valves broke off at some time, probably for scrap, are scruffy and moss covered but the main thing is they are perfectly legal to use as you wish.... I have checked with the original supplier.

Wood draws its air in from above the ash bed, coal from underneath.

12 mm mild steel bar grate will last 2 or 3 years of daily use at least .

If you want high efficiency smokeless combustion of wood you need to go with preheated air.

Cheers sardine, I will probably be using some purchased smokeless stuff, nice to know about the 12mm, it will probably only be lit a couple of times a week for a few hours so even a year out of the 12mm would do me... easy to replace and have loads on stock.

I believe that the burning of wood is accepted as smokeless,ie you can burn it in a smokeless zone.
You have to let it dry untill it starts to radial crack before burning if using logs ?

How about making the grate so that the bars just drop into notches, then you can replace them ad infinitum ? Its usually the middle bars that burn out first.

Have a look at cast iron drain grids. I found a standard size just needed a small amount grinding off the corners to fit in a gas bottle. Obviously you have to then make support, fill gaps around the edge etc.

one of my neighbors. He has a smaller shop about half the size of mine (1000squ.ft.) heats to.
Well I used by batch stove from late November to now. I never let my shop go below 60 degrees F. and most of the time in the 70's F. If you watched the videos on this stove you know it can produce big heat on very small amounts of wood. Normally in years past I would burn 4-5 logger's cords of wood (4ft.x4ft.x8ft.is a loggers cord). This year I burn't a little under 2 cords.

I think the TLUD and rocket stoves will be somewhere about version 5 , got to find some pipe for version 1's flue yet, looks like it's going to be a buy it new outcome, freebie stuff is hard to find around here.

What sort of wall and diameter you after Steve and I'll check the stock to see if I've anything. I think it'll all be too small but you never know.

It's only a small stove so my inexperienced view is 100mm dia should do the trick, wall thickness should not matter too much... Off to the scrappy this afternoon so may get sorted but not holding my breath

with my build it was only 3mm gas bottle or tube with a steel plate on top i used 5mm

for the firebox it was mixed 3mm does warp with the heat so 5mm is better to use for the air inlets i used 2mm

5mm box section is fine as long as insert a ss insert its the vortex chamber that takes the heat hard and will distroy itself in 2 years +

first build i used 3mm box section 4 3/4" and a stainless steel tube 4" this gave me what i wanted and kept me warm in winter

make sure your flue collar is slightly larger than 100mm,the flue slips inside this not over it

I have some sheet I will use for the collar once I have the flue, either that or weld the flue direct

I'd never do such a thing mate...

@cumbriasteve - I'm pretty sure my stuff will be too small, think it's 70mm. You're still welcome to some though.
