i put a bid in what ime willing to pay seconds to end...that way i dont get dragged into a stupid panic stricken bidding war...works for me
Likewise. I'll only ever put in one bid - the max that I'm prepared to pay for the item. I enter the bid just a few seconds before the auction ends and if I win it, it's great. If I don't then it's still great because it went for more than it was worth to me.
Apart from all that, it's great fun getting a bid in as close to the end as you dare!

Personally, I can see the good & bad of all approaches. Bidding within the last moments I do personally do, but always manually, whenever possible. I've only ever once used an automated bid. Putting the maximum in early on is something I occasionally do too. It all depends on what the item is. Sometimes I'll just put a token bid in near the start of the auction and then decide later on whether to up my initial maximum or not if outbid.
Personally, I would like to see the 10 minute extension or similar applied to Ebay, but it won't happen. Conversely, in the debate regarding last minute bids or snipes, as much as I may not like doing it, I've also seen plenty of occasions where something I've been outbid on by placing a maximum early on has been relisted a few days later. Whether that's due to some numpty having 'got to have it' syndrome and then not paying, else a seller trying to raise the price, I have no idea, but stuff like that is what makes placing last moment bids seem more appealing on occasion.
End of the day, I tend not to worry either way. If one gets something, all well and good. If not, there'll almost always be another turns up at some point.
Personally, even with all of its flaws, I think Ebay is handy, from a buyers viewpoint. It saves the possible confusion and hassle of dealing with people in the flesh when negotiating prices. There are some out there with either poor or skewed maths skills. You know that the price you see on the screen is what you pay.

just leave it till last minute and put the max bid i want to pay ,if it goes overthat its tough luck i didnt want it anyhow. so all thee last minute devices mean jack s......hit its the highest bidder that gets it if there prepaired to pay over the odds

No, because I decide what the most I'm willing to bid up to is, then enter that. To keep bumping up your bid is a fools game as you just go over your budget. If it was worth X more to you then why didn't you bid that in the first place?
If everybody behaved in this way there would be no need for sniping software as it wouldn't matter when the bid was entered.

When ever I have been to a real auction I stand at the back and look totally disinterested, if the price is right I give a wink to the auctioneer right at the last moment. Same on eBay, if you bid early you are telling your competitors its a good item, and you have just made yourself pay more in the end. I don't even watch items on my account for the same reason.

Why do people put a delivery charge on stuff and then you contact them they say you need to sort out your own carrier
Or ignore the bit that says "collection only" and ask you to post it.

Do you mean they win the item then ask or message you while the listing in in progress? I quite often see things too far away and ask if it can be boxed or palletized so I can arrange a courier, only if they say yes do I bid.
