Gravitex or 3M 08861?

I had fully intended using Gravitex on my wheel arches once the welding was done. Gravitex is a stonechip and over paintable; the 08861 is a body shutz and not overpaintable.

However, the 3M is less than half the price of the Gravitex.

I am not too bothered about putting a top coat on as I don't mind the matt finish of the 3m.

Has anyone used both? Is it just a question of preference about the look and finish or will the Gravitex be worth the extra money?

I realise there are lots of threads on the forum where Gravitex is lauded (which was why it was my initial choice), but are there any fans of the 3M 08861 on here?

ive used both , was never that keen on the 3m as it never dries fully and will have bits of grit and what not stuck to it , if you really dont care what it looks like then it should work fine for you

i just prefer to overpaint stonechip with some gloss so it washes up clean and its easier to spot any new scabs /damage

I hate the black schutz never fully dry tar stuff, well it does sort of dry after a few months. Muck magnet IMO.

Tried both and the Gravitex is a far better product in my opinion, but Gravitex is a stonechip and the 3M is a shulz so not really a fair comparison.

I was under the impression that the 3M dried to a rubbery finish. I definitely wouldn't want something that stayed tacky or sticky.

The Schutz does dry to the touch but the rough finish holds dirt and soon looks old unless it's pressure washed regularly.

in my experience using body shutz straight onto new steel doesn't work well at all, it starts to rust much better to prime and use a topcoat first then some underbody protection of your choice

You say half the price of gravitex, how much are you paying for gravitex then, it's only £15 a tub at my local shop

theres other brand overpaintable stonechips that seem to be as good if price is a concern

The 3m is £4.23, the Gravitex about £12, though I think I can find it cheaper. What is weird is that yesterday Metalflake had a new web site design and today it is back to the old one. Must have been testing it out.

I was planning to do the arches and sills, but not underneath, so reckoned on 4-6 1 litre bottles.

In truth the car has lots of welding still to do, but just for my own sanity I would like to fully finish one wheel arch and put the tyre back on.

Other brands I have looked at are Indasa and Mipa - quite cheap and you can overpaint them - they just don't seem very widely used.

www.paint4u.com have Gravitex at just over £10 inc VAT per 1L. Exact price depends colour.

I have managed to find it a bit cheaper at 247 so I've ordered a couple of litres to see how I get on.
